100mph in Legacy 2.5 GT wagon for 90miles -- Legally!

Recommended Posts

Last month I started a thread asking if there were any issues with running a 2006 Legacy 2.5 GT automatic wagon at 110mph for 50 minutes. This was in preparation for the Silver State Challenge Classic, a 90 mile open road race held in Nevada (see www.sscc.us for more info).

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/issues-running-110mph-50-minutesi-212496.html

So, how did things turn out?

Well, this being my first rally, I decided to enter the 100mph class instead of the 110mph class (classes start at 95mph and go to 180mph, plus unlimited). So my goal was to finish in 54:00.00.

My Legacy has 59K miles. Modifications include downpipe, retune, higher performance brake pads and fluids. New all season tires with a W speed rating (168mph). Otherwise the car is stock.

The most popular type of car were Corvettes followed by Porsches and Mustangs. Two Ferraris. One Lamborghini. One Subaru (mine). Two pickups. One wagon (mine). 127 cars total.

I did not have a navigator. Instead I relied on an iPhone app called Harry's Laptimer. For details on how this worked, please see:

http://www.gps-laptimer-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1631&p=8275#p8275

Race conditions were perfect. 65 degrees at the start, clear skies, and no wind.

My pre race test drives at 110mph suggested that the Legacy might be a little floaty at that speed. This was one reason I moved into the 100mph class (I originally entered the 110mph class).

On race day the car was very stable. 100mph pretty uneventful. 110mph was comfortable. Much better than my pre race tests, probably due to different road conditions and lighter winds. The top speed I achieved was 123mph. I could have gone faster, but the rules for my class limited me to 124mph. Hit 125mph and you are disqualified.

Acceleration above 100mph is pretty slow, as you would expect. You need long straightaways, and in Nevada there are plenty. The top speed section of the course is 10 miles long (the longest straight was 12 miles). The key here again is no wind.

The Legacy speedometer was right on my GPS speedometer.

I don't think there would be any problem running the car in the 110mph class assuming little or no wind. I don't think I'd go in higher class.

I wound up finishing 4th in my class (out of eight). Came in 1.0149 seconds fast.

Anyway, it was a well run event and I had a great time. The Legacy exceeded my expectations and continues to serve as reliable daily driver.

How did the car handle? Wind noise etc..what were some of the things you noticed the car was doing on the long straights, its Nevada so I'm assuming elevation changes weren't there.

And that sounds like a fun time, good job.

It handles fine. Slow and heavy to inputs. Wind noise isn't terribly bad.

When you push past 120 mph the problem becomes imperfections in the road. Specifically the rumble strips in the middle to alert you to a lane change (most are 2 lane roads). Best I can describe it - it's like hitting a patch of snow on a lane change at speed.

At that speed car wants to get into boost when you get on the throttle. Oddly if you hold it consistent you return a modest 19-20mpg.

All in all the car is very civil at 120mph and you'd hardly know you were going so fast if it wasn't for the speedo. The longer you sit there the slower things happen. The world only really gets 'fast' when you start approaching 150mph and beyond.

i wanna do this so bad. curious, how hot did the car get?

Well, my engine monitoring gizmo (http://gopointtech.com/products/) didn't record my engine stats (usually works great, so I probably goofed). However, the engine temp gauge never moved out of the normal range.

Engine rpm's were 4000 at 105mph.

Remember, it was a relatively cool day. 65 degrees at the start. High 70's at the finish.

Thanks for posting this! I was thinking about this on Saturday and was hoping you'd update the other thread, but here it is.

When I read your first thread I did a bunch of research on it and was going to prepare to join you out there. But then reality hit me right in the face: my boy starting kindergarten, wife on a business trip and not enough time to prep. I might try and hit up the race in May. I have a stg3 car with a FMIC and bigger turbo I really want to see how it does at 110+ sustained speeds.

Awesome! Can't wait for video!

Are you going to do it again next time?

Heck yes! I'm so close and the drive there and back is wide, wide, wide, wide open :) US 50 is the "Loneliest Road in America." Well yeah, until you drive NV 375, aka the Extraterrestrial Highway, which is even lonelier!

Lets get a group together for the next one. I really want to run the 120 group in my Honda.
