Project Spec.B #163

August 2011, #163 came home with me with just over 60K on the odometer, bone stock besides tint and red painted calipers.

 

At 77K (right after going stage 1), the VF40 showed signs of failure were imminent with bearing noise and it was replaced under warranty.

 

Stage 2 hardware was installed at 80K - Finished up the Infamous e-tune at 82.5K. Pulls well and smooth power delivery. Of course now I'm hungry for more!

 

Installed the PW TMIC and doing a tune with Cryotune Performance for Stage 2 + PW at 86.5K. Updated the engine bay at the same time for a different theme overall.

 

87K - Cryotune Stage2+ is complete. Really pleased with the tune's drivability and performance! Will be working with him for the "next stage"!

 

For the 90K service, installed Gates blue racing kevlar accessory belts and tensioner pulley, OEM NGK plugs, Extra-S/LW Shockproof for tranny/diff, oil change with good old Rotella T6 5W-40 and a new engine under cover as well as a Grimmspeed LWCP.

 

At 93K installed Stoptech slotted rotors, street performance pads, and SS lines with ATE Super Blue fluid. BBK is overkill for my DD at this point and this stage of a brake upgrade really fit the bill.

 

Clutch upgraded at 96K. ClutchMasters FX350, OEM SMFW, TSK3, along with Group N Transmission Mount and Crossmember Bushings completed the upgrade. Break in is complete and this is an amazing setup! OEM pedal feel with great holding capabilities and super smooth shifts. Engagement is about 1/4 of the stroke off the floor and totally predictable. Doing the trans mount and crossmember bushings was the right choice - much less drivetrain slop during shifts and the SMFW paired with my Grimmspeed LWCP makes rev matching a breeze.

 

105K Maintenance completed. Gates timing kit, Subaru OEM water pump and gasket, SAMCO radiator hoses, OEM thermostat, replaced cam seals, and installed Group N motor mounts.

 

106K installed the TurboXS CBE to complete the full 3" TBE & a JDM Legacy GT front bumper, beam, fogs, and JDM STi lip were added.

 

124K Installed replacement Exedy Stage 1 organic clutch, modified TSK3 for new TOB, and loving it compared to the CM FX350! Also refreshed trans and diff with fresh Extra-S, and a new CV boot on the passenger front axle.

 

140K Installed new Bilstein B8 shocks and struts with new spec.B tophats, Subtle Solutions 3/8" saggy but spacers, and a new OEM radiator. Also installed Grimmspeed CAI, and new 05 Subaru headlight assemblies after going through so many issues with my HID retrofit.

You've been busy! Do you have the rear lip on yet? I need to shoot some pics of the B.

 

Yes the trunk lip is on :cool: and Central Composites is redoing the front lip and going to prototype some skirts too!

 

We definitely need to do a shoot so ican advance away from iPhone pictures.

Nice car. Do you still have the stock Spec B rims? If so I'm interested? I would like to see some rear pics, as well as interior pics.

 

I do have the spec.B wheels, and think I'm keeping them. Considering powder coating and running them for winters unless I can find someone with clean LGT stockers in 17".

 

If mattg and I get together soon we will do a proper shoot inclusive of those areas. I do have some rear shots I'll add when I get to a computer.

I hate when there isn't a computer around lol. I would be willing to trade you my stock 17's for your Spec B rims. what do you think? Do you just want to do rims or rims and tires? My tires are stock size and are Nitto Neo gens with plenty of tread as my leggy isn't my Daily. i Think I have like a 7 or 8 on the tread life still.

Skirt lips? They were going to do full rockers in dry CF for me but I didn't end up pursuing it. I would be in on the lips though.

Definitely not tires since these will be dedicated winters. I'm still on the fence and may hold onto these or I may go with something other than the early LGT stockers as well. These will be winters but it's hard to not consider 04 STi BBS for winter duty to keep them light and a little better offset. I'll let you know if I do decide to part with them :)

where can i get that lip?

 

CentralComposites.com is based here in Oregon and they have the molds currently (eventually they will be gone forever).

 

I love that trunk lip. Makes me want to get one for my Spec B.
I really am happy with it. I like how it carries the body line from the rear fenders - ties in really nicely.

While waiting on the next revision of the tune I've been busy getting some other parts together for some more updates.

 

Fresh CF front lip is ready so I'll be fitting that up, along with the Subtle radiator shroud and Redline Tuning Hood struts so I can rid myself of the annoying prop rod. Need to install the AVO TB hose (OEM is pretty fatigued per my mechanic) which I plan to do once I get my BP TMIC reinforcement kit in the mail from BarManBean.

 

Going to try out some PlastiDip on the chrome rocker inserts too. Hoping to get them close to the color of the wheels so I have some black, gunmetal, silver metallizer and clear. Need to paint a few test pieces to see if I can layer it in a way it suits the car.

 

Looks like brakes are in the near future. Pads are getting pretty low so I'm researching options for rotors/pads and will flush the fluid and replace with super blue. Thinking Stop Tech pads and rotors, or possibly some DBAs.

 

The IP&T GB for sways/ELs/brackets is just a little ways out, so that will wrap up the suspension work for now. Seeing as they come in Blue - they will get powdercoated before I install them. Thinking of matching the wheels or going with gloss white to match the KB ELs.

 

May look for some used spec.B Bilsteins and send them in to be rebuilt/valved by Bilstein for the Swift springs. This or HDs. Just thinking the valving for the spring rate will be the way to go and since I have 80K on mine they are due.

Haven't taken any interior shots lately - it's an area I haven't modded outside of LED lighting and getting the Subaru style Momo knob. Definitely will soon for a "before" since I do want to do some audio upgrades as well as a few bling bits (new leather boots, extended armrest, shifter and knob).
