Down Pipe Quality and fitment?

Recommended Posts

Ok so Im going to purchase a down pipe and up pipe and was just looking for everyones experiences with them and combos. I going to keep my stock cat back for now. I just want a better exhaust note and more power. So any input on Divorced, catted, 1 piece or 2 would be great. Also value vs quality. Ive already tried searching and opinons arent listed so...lol thanks

Adding Intercoolers to the list. Do want to take up room in the forums with multiple opinion questions.

Here are the brands im looking at right now

TMIC Intercoolers

AVO

Perrin

IPR - first choice

Down pipe

Perrin catted 2pc - 1st choice

Cobb catted

Tsudo

invidia divorced catted

invidia catless

ERZ

Fast Motorsports

Up Pipe

Invidia

Perrin

Fast Motorsports

Any recommendations would be great.

Well please do not go Fastmotorsport. They're value and NO quality. CNT Racing (used to be called ERZ) make quality downpipes. I love mine and the fitment was spot on. Invidia or Grimmspeed would be great for an uppipe. Even the GTSpec that hicksta mentioned is a quality name.

Invidia catless up/dp here fit's great. My IPR tmic was a bitch to mount the first time, after that it's just like stock.

We are in NJ, so hopefully we can actually help out here.

Our experience shows the invidia UP to be a great piece and a great value. Weve installed probably 200 in the past 10 years and havent had a failure or a bad fitment on them yet.

For downpipes, we like the cobb, invidia, and turboxs units, again for their great quality control and fitment the first time out.

For TMIC, if you have an AT, the perrin is a good choice. On a manual you will want either an AVO or Process West due to fitment issues of the other ones.

If you need installs or want to purchase locally, dont hesitate to stop by or call or email us.

Just to add to the list of TMIC's...Spearco is currently working on a TMIC fitment for the '08 WRX. Should also fit the LGT as well. I'm in on a group buy for them to produce them and may lend my LGT wagon to them for fitment purposes and for them to design ducting specific for the LGT. Should be a good alternative to the Process West TMIC...although it will probably be pretty pricey when it hits the market...

Not to derail this thread or anything...

The Spearco is fully developed for the '08+ WRX and is in production. Those in on the GB (self included) are just waiting for it to be finished and shipped. Back when the GB was floated this item was offered here to the LGT community but interest was basically zero. Now that things are rolling along I'm glad to hear someone will offer up a car to fit a splitter to, since that should be the only difference in fitment. Though the kit at full price is going to be expensive, the Aussie dollar doesn't look like it will weaken anytime soon either, meaning the Process West IC that is the only real competition to this part isn't going to be a vastly better deal.

Please do keep us updated if indeed you become the test mule for this new IC.

Sorry I'm new to the whole forum thing. Can you please explain.

As far as supporting vendors goes, paintpollz is just encouraging you to spend your money with vendors that spend good money to advertise here and help support our site. We like to throw our business their way because they are helping keep our website running, which benefits us all. In addition, supporting our vendors keeps them supporting us by bringing new products to market and giving them a little extra free time to spend on the site answering our questions.

We especially like to support vendors that spend time here giving us free advice and solid professional experience. By the way, Mike at AZP in NJ is absolutely one of those great vendors on the site and is fairly well respected around here (as far as I can tell anyway).

If you spend money with Mike or any other reputable vendor, you indirectly support the rest of us. If you're gonna spend money anyways, it's nice to get the intangibles that go with it. One of those intangibles is good vendor support.

Obviously not all vendors are equal, just because they have vendor status here, but at least you can assume most of the scammers and truly awful options are pretty well filtered out. Read for a while here or give a few a try for small stuff to see which ones you like.

Or just take it to AZP and be done with it. :) I haven't worked with Mike at AZP personally, but based on the number of his valuable forum posts, he knows wtf he's talking about.

As far as ups and downs go, don't discount used. I've heard a number of knowledgeable members say the best bang for the buck is a used sti up. Fyi ... I've got a Cobb catted down and a Process West Intercooler sitting in my garage waiting to go on the car (as well as a Borla cat-back). So haven't run them yet, but those are what my research is telling me will best meet my own personal needs.

Not all the vendors are helpful or even knowledgeable about the products they sell. Some of them are absent from the tech forums entirely, some only post thinly veiled advertisements and some post ridiculous misinformation.

There are a few here who are IMO total scumbags, selling garbage off-brand products. Even some of the reps of very high-end brands are super nice and talkative until you have a problem, at which point they disappear. Caveat emptor. Hang around for a while and you will see who the good ones are. All this has been discussed in multiple threads over in the Feedback section.

^ I don't really disagree with any of that. But even the crappiest vendors here still have to pay for the privilege of being a vendor here. So, if nothing else, they're contributing to the bottom line for the site owners.

However, that said, there are definitely vendors that I like more than others based on what I've read and some of my own personal experience. Honestly, I just haven't had enough negative personal experiences to truly dislike anybody, but there are good and bad, just like everywhere else. Shall we amend paintpollz' advice to say support the good vendors. :)

mike has proactively reached out to you and offered his service and expertise. these are the kind of people you should order your parts thru. of course he is trying to get a sale, but he also offers second to none customer service that you really cant put a price on. you are supporting the people who support the community the most, and that is good for everyone. this guy has a great track record

Used STi UP (catless), CNT Racing DP (catted), and AVO TMIC here.

Definitely support the vendors who chime in here and are helpful in answering questions. I haven't checked the feedback area here but I have a few that I've interacted with that I like to buy from.

As for AZP installs, they're a great bunch for sure. I've been interacting with Mike online since before I bought my wagon in June of '04. He wasn't a member here when I first joined so it was on the Edmunds forums that I found his knowledge and insightful replies very helpful. Glad to see he's got a business going with this stuff now.

The west coast Mike (he'll hate that I called him that as I know he's a East Coast/NY kid at heart) at Infamous Performance and Tuning (with Shamar doing the tunes) are also very helpful and (IMHO) straight shooters and were members before they became vendors.

Cheers!

Most of us could not give a rats ass about Tide's bottom dollar as long as its a cash positive endeavor. Good vendors and bad vendors both contribute to the site.;)

What do we care about? Vendors that are RESPONSIBLE to the forum providing EXCELLENT INFORMATION as well as service, not just sales. NOT every vendor fits this description and some are downright shady in the way they do business.

Mike @ InfamousPerformance&Tuning has been the most valueable resource to me. I also have tremendous respect for Mike @ AZP Installs. Both are straight shooters, honest businessmen and tremendous resources for information.

As far as downpipes go, go ERZ or go expensive. The only other cheap, reasonable option IMO is a shorty DP and ERZ is so cheap its hardly a savings. ERZ has proven that they will replace a DP with no problems if there is a fitment issue.

As far as TMIC go, I know its expensive but IMHO its PW > the other guys. Worth $1000? Well I'd certainly skimp on a DP and pay on the TMIC.

UP? Whatever your cheapest reasonable option is. I suggest STI or decatted. NOT GONNA CRACK, thats for sure. GOING TO FIT, thats for sure.

Anyhow most of the usual suspects are in here. You will do fine with the advice here.
