vicdeng
Hi, i have this P0420 code for almost a year. It's a cat problem. (NOT A O2 sensor!!!) and i am thinking to ignore it and run it until it dies and gets me horrible gas mileage. Then i will buy a new cat to replace it. However, i have a chance to get a free used catalytic converter from a 05 STI, does anyone have tried to bring that to a muffler shop and ask them to weld it on? BTW, i have a 96 LGT. Any input is appreciate it. thank you
Stang70Fastback
I would just run it until it dies. My cat recently died, but I'm still putting off replacing it because, as you can see, there is a lot of disassembly required to get to it. http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01506/cat-article_1506362c.jpg
TbirdMan
lol, I was gonna make that joke too. as for the OP, I would try to get an O2 sensor spacer and gut the cat.
vicdeng
I thought since i have a cat for free. Then i just wanna fix it. so any other input?
Stang70Fastback
I wouldn't suggest fixing the cat yourself. Bring it to a vet - they have the tools to properly fix it. Plus they can inspect the cat for any potential issues that might lead to failure down the road. Gutting the cat is never a good idea - particularly if it isn't dead yet. johnegg
install a ''spark plug anti fouler'' on the rear sensor. this makes it less sensitive. it may make the light go out. it will not make the MPG any better. but a good subaru o2 sensor up front and a spacer on the rear, will / should allow you to gut the cat.
