LivinLegacy
Hey guys, question for you all, see if you can help me figure out what this problem may be before i start replacing things i don't need. ok, when i am driving straight down a high way at about 60 mph, smooth, when the road bends to the right, still smooth, but when the road bends to the left i get a shimmy, and a slight thumping sound from the front left of my car. what i think it may be is the wheel bearing, being that they are made so awsomely for 05/06 leggys... or could it be my axel? when i looked under the car, and looked at where the axel goes to the tranny, seems as though there is a slight build up on in it. vs the the passenger side. if it is an axel, hard to change out my self? also, while under my car, seems as though my oil pan gasket needs to be changed, i have quite a bit of build up around the bottom of my block and usually get a burning oil smell from my car. Is that hard to change? and one last thing.... I am about to hit 100k and they reccomend the timing belt and water pump at that milage, worth going to the stealership and having them do it? and maybe also have them do the oil pan gasket? or should i bring it to some one else to get it done? i dont' mind doing the work. but the timing belt/water pump i don't think i can handle. and also fyi for all those with bearing issues, they are pretty damn easy to change out. i did one of mine in about and hour and a half and thats because i was learning as i was going. better than paying 325 or more from the stealership. which i made the mistake of doing once already... annd now i have to replace a third one (rear right) and now based on you guys deduction a 4th one.. all under 100k ... ffs... thanks all
ehsnils
For the oil pan - start with checking if the screws needs to be tightened. Don't overdo it though. As for the vibration - you have some different possible causes: 1. Brake caliper. This is often the pins that the caliper floats on - remove, lubricate and re-assemble. 2. Axle joint. 3. Wheel bearing. What you can do is to take a parking lot, drive slowly in a circle with the steering wheel almost at max one way and the other and listen for noise. If you get noise it's probably a joint, but it can be a bearing too. Start with number 1 - on both sides front. And if you are at it - take the rear ones too. Check the pads and rotors while you are messing around there too. The timing belt is tricky on the DOHC engine but wouldn't be too bad on the SOHC. I did change the belt on a DOHC once but that was when the engine was out of the bay and it was a lot easier that way. Double and triple-check that you get the timing right. And the final "dummy" test - crank the engine by hand with a socket on the crankshaft to make sure that you don't get any interference - several turns just to make sure. joe sko
The shimmy sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Its the same thing that happened when mine went.(our legacies arent known for having good ones) I have some very mechanical friends and when i asked them about the noise i was getting they were sure it was a wheel bearing. Turns out it was. Good luck with your repairs.
