super-roo17
so my 07 lgt goes through oil like beer at a bar. i put the car on jack stands and looked for leaking and found no leaks, drain plug and oil filter were both tight. but for some reason i need to keep filling the damn thing with oil once every three weeks or so.. it never gets completly empty only to the fill mark, but i should be able to go 3500 miles with out worrying about blowing up! so i was wondering if anyone knows of a solution before i take it to a local subaru dealer and pay $$$$$... HELP PLEASE!!
Silinc3r
If you search you should be able to find the answers but since I am here are you running synthetic oil? Silinc3r's 05 SWP GT/Spec B
underground000
what oil are you using? how many miles do you put on in 3 weeks? how much do you put in? try switching to Rotella T6, get a compression check, could be a bad piston, turbo seal, or head gasket if you are losing coolant. or just bring it in for someone to take a look to get a definite answer and search, its been covered and telling us it uses oil doesnt help cause there multiple problems that can be wrong with it 5eat downshift rev match:) Powder coated wheels: completed:)
xt2005bonbon
First, how much oil are you actually adding every 3500 miles? It is not unusual to add about a quart every OCI. That is actually my case. Even Subaru made a bulletin saying that if you drive your car a bit hard, and also use engine braking, the car will burn some oil. So they advise to check the oil level regularly and add a little if necessary.
Max Capacity
Oil usage, I never heard of that....doesn't someone's sig say to check your oil and top it off as needed. These things use oil. Hey, my new short block has over 8000 miles on it now. Doesn't use oil like the old one did. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). underground000
My dealer told me (back in 08) if I use synthetic check the oil every time I get gas it burns synthetic and didn't recommend it:lol: didn't they also say burning up to 1 quart of oil is normal between oil changes? And someone here said his dealer won't even take a look at a car under warranty if its not burning more than 1 quart between oil changes 5eat downshift rev match:) Powder coated wheels: completed:)
xt2005bonbon
Here is a link to a TSB made by Amsoil. They have references to Subaru TSBs as well. Max Capacity
Dealer will say 1 qt per 1000 miles is normal, same as VW. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. nightspeed98
If it still under warranty have the dealer do compression and oil consumption testing. Well take a few thousand miles, but if its still an issue and under warranty when test started, the problem would be warrantied. Mine got to the point where I needed new motor and turbo. Subaru took care of me. Hope they do to you as well.
CAMS
All of the brands I have dealt with in the past say a quart in a thousand miles is within normal oil usage range. The design of this motor further compounds the issue and if you drive hard then oil usage will increase. My 05 OBK 2.5XT uses quite a bit more than 1qt per 1000 miles but I haven't cared that much because it is not that expensive to add some here or there, especially when compared to a new bottom end. I also drive my vehicle pretty hard sometimes. When I bought my car it had 114xxx miles (now 150xxx) worth of previous owners with probable extended/forgotton oil change intervals, low oil/no oil, or crap oil/filter combinations under its belt. The bottom line is it needs the oil and I love the car so in goes the oil. I just run an oil that suits my needs and wont break the bank. Sorry for the long post. AZP Installs
Dealer will say 1 qt per 1000 miles is normal, same as VW. This is true. We have found if a car is burning about 1Q/1k it will eventually be found out that you have a cracked #4 piston ringland... If it's under warranty, make sure to get it checked out with a compression and leak down test to determine the exact issue. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Then what do you think is normal oil consumption for these cars in a 3750 mile interval (assuming healthy engine, stock tune, and driven hard at times)? AZP Installs
1Q every 3500 would be "normal" in my book, unless you are tracking the car hard during every oil change, then you might say 1Q ever 2k miles. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. EJ25subie05
won't an air oil separator help to an extent? because every time i take off my intercooler theres always oil there. I've been thinking about buying to see if it would help at least somewhat. my motor with 35k miles goes through about a quart between every oil change, which is every 3k miles. Then I'd be somewhat OK then. Close to 3000 miles and have added about 0.8 quart so far. 62K here.

EJ25subie05
but is the air oil separator worth the extra dough? its like 5x's the price of the catch can if not more. i know catch cans only catch the oil, but the air oil separator puts it back into the motor is it still worth it? anyone here seen a decrease in oil usage after putting an air oil separator on?
