Timing belt, replace or waste?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, how's it going? What do y'all think of this timing belt condition? Should I replace for the peace of mind or waste of money? I'm probably only gonna drive this car for one more winter after this one so not sure if I just keep it and hope it doesn't snap. Previous owner doesn't know when it was last replaced. Sorry for the kinda shitty pictures, focus was going crazy.

Thanks anyways, cheers

Don't forget to set the timing properly when you change those belts. Wouldn't want to damage the motor.

I wish you didnt delete that thread from years ago where you drove off the road in a snowstorm. That was a classic.

Well that's embarassing, thanks anyways I'll replace em

No worries thats the accessories belt, fan, alternator, etc.

There are also referred to as drive belts by some people.

Check the inside for cracks, if you don't see any, then you should be fine.

You have to decide if having one of those $18.00 belts break at the worst possible time... like say a cold snowy day...oh yeah lets add windy too.

But I'm one of those that will replace the car battery before its 6th Winter or 5th Winter, preventative maintenance has major payback.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

AC belt doesn't look like it's that old in my opinion, the one with the writing on it. But at the same time, for how much they cost, why not do both..

Edit: I know the power steering/alternator belt likely has writing on it too, but I can't see any in the pics.. Still a poor way to describe on my part.

Yea if you don't know, replace them. Since the drive belts are easy and cheap.

Parents van one time snapped a belt three hours away from anything. Dad drove home on a duct taped belt since it was either that or wait hours for a possible tow and pay hundreds.

On the timing belt topic, how many miles are on your car? When did you buy it?

How long/how many miles did the prior owner have the car for?

219km's, I was free yesterday so I swung by my mechanic's and we checked the timing belt, it was pretty cracked, so I'm changing it Monday.

Good call. Drive belt snaps and you get stranded. Timing belt snaps and you get engine damage.
