Adding Turn signal to my mirror???

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I have a Legacy 3.6R limited 2013 and I want to add turn signal flasher on my mirror. My previous car was a Legacy GT 2006 and I love the look of turn signal on mirror, but I'm from Canada I we don't have this option on Legacy in Canada like special appearance package. I have contacted Subaru Genuine part and they give me a list of part needed, but i'm not sure that I need all this stuff. Can someone help me with that? someone have already done that? Thanks :)

It wasn't an option on the USDM Legacy either. The Outbacks have them, but I'm not sure if it's a direct fit. Also, the stock mirrors aren't wired for the turn signals, so you would have to run new wiring.

Maybe it have a conector close to te mirror?

Nope, we've had a few members on here check (while trying to fit the JDM turn signal mirrors). The stock connector (even on the heated/powered mirrors) is different, lacks the turn-signal wires (like nstg8r mentioned). Not PnP for sure.

You might be able to retro-fit these off an Outback (using those part #s SoC provided you with) but there is no guarantee they'll function properly.

Since your car is a 2013+, I think you need to concentrate on the ones in bold, the rest you can likely skip.

mirror unit 91036AJ12B 91036AJ13B

MIRROR GLASS 91039AJ00A 91039AJ01A (should be the same as current ones)

LAMP FLASHER ASSEMBLY 84401AJ000 84401AJ010

COVER OUTER, DOES NOT COME PAINTED 91054AJ12ANN 91054AJ13ANN (needed to house the flashers)

LOWER COVER 91054AJ10A 91054AJ11A (should be the same as your current ones)

The work shouldn't really be that tough, honestly. I did a similar job to this a couple years ago when building a new Ram 1500 police vehicle. That job only required two wires routed under the dash and into the door. A decent set of non-metalic trim removal tools can be huge help too. As for the cost though, it's definitely gonna be expensive, so how much is it worth to you to have the only car like it in town?

Its not the work , but the price of all separate part.

I think the part numbers you listed are for the standard non-heated outback mirror housing without the turn signals. (Except for the lamp flasher assembly which is correct.) The North America part catalogs are incomplete if you go to sites like subaruonlineparts.com in that they list the standard mirrors, but not the Outback SAP mirror housings. What makes the part catalogs confusing is that they list the lamp flasher assembly as an option with the standard mirrors, but the lamp flasher assembly does not compatible with the standard mirrors. If you look at photos of the mirrors with turn signals versus the standard outback mirrors, you'll notice the shape of the mirror housings are very different (tapered versus square).

I've been trying to figure out the part numbers for the SAP turn signal mirror parts, and here are what I've figured out so far:

Rear View Mirror Unit RH 91036AJ300

Rear View Mirror Unit LH 91036AJ310

Cover Mir Body RH 91054AJ220

Cover Mir Body LH 91054AJ230

Lamp flasher assembly RH 84401AJ000

Lamp flasher assembly LH 84401AJ010

Still trying to figure out the part numbers for the mirror glass and the bottom cover.

You'll need 5 parts total for the full assembly (mirror unit, cover, lower cover, mirror glass, and turn signal assembly).

Was at the dealer a few days ago and I was able to confirm that the SAP package mirrors on the Outback are considerably taller than the Legacy mirrors, so none of the parts like the mirror glass will transfer over. The complete assembly must be purchased for the conversion, and even then, the bigger mirrors might look ungainly on a Legacy sedan. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/01/umyju9y6.jpg

In doing some further investigation, it appears to me that the Outback SAP mirrors with integrated turn signals use many of the same parts as the current generation Impreza and Foresters. The Impreza and Foresters are "flagpole" style mirrors, so the core is different, but the profile of the caps and mirror glass look the same to me.

Haven't found the time to go down to the local dealer with a precision tape measure to verify yet.

I was thinking about doing that too. Is there enough room behind the cover? Are those the Subaru light units or universal from iJDMToy or something?

Cheap eBay LEDs... http://www.ebay.com/itm/161368374165?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

No, there's not enough room behind the cover. I will be taking the Dremel to the mirror housings when I'm ready to finish the install. I saved the pieces that I cut out of the mirror caps to use as templates. They still have one of the clips in them, so I should be able to line them up perfectly. Ideally though, I should have done that before I glued the LEDs in place and used the caps as a template.

I don't know yet, but I think I may sand down some of that glue around the LEDs to make it look better. Eventually, I may just have them vinyl wrapped.

This may be trickier than I expected. It appears that the motor for the mirror is attached to the back of the housing right where I would need to cut it. I may have to make the hole in the mirror caps larger for the LEDs and mount them flush on the rear.

Gonna take another crack at this soon. This time, I'm thinking about mounting the LED's directly to the mirror's interior housing the same way the OEM ones would have screwed into place but instead, using 3M molding tape. The mirror caps would then be able to be removed without having to remove the LEDs as well. For the not so clean edges I cut into the mirror caps, I'm gonna finish them off with door edge trim.
