I need a new one, aftermarket. Any recommendations? Something that bolts onto our stock location, and is recirculating?

I asked my tuner and he was like of course you should change it, oem is only good for a certain amount of boost then it starts leaking.

Previously had GFB and my tuner said to get rid of it. Anything with adjustable recirculate vs to atmosphere has a potential chance to leak. I didn't take a chance and went with a new Cobb LF Bypass unit. No issues, still makes whoosh whoosh noises if you're into that on cold days.

Turbosmart Kompact is what I've been running on mine and love it. Full re-circ, I previously had a GFB adj one. Although I have had my eye on that synapse that Infosecdad posted. Actually reminded me that I need to buy it before I get the car tuned.

Never heard of synapse engineering, when did they hit the scene? I'm sorta going between the cobb, perrin and synapse atm. Can never go wrong with Cobb parts, the perrin is a nice price and has all the bells and whistles, and the synapse seems to be popular.

On another note, what does a leaking bpv feel like? What exactly does upgrading it do or feel like? What should i expect exactly?

I ask because my boost and vacuum doesn't seem consistent, and everything else in terms of upgradable has been turbo/boost wise, the turbo, IC and EBCS, so all that's left that can be unstable is the oem bpv. I have a bnr billet 20g turbo, not sure if that turbo warrants a better bpv.... but I also have BC stage 3 cams, so everything is a bit different and new for me. I am assuming the bpv is a possible oversight lol.

I guess a better question is what are the symptoms of a failing bpv?

Ran the original OEM one in my track car for 15yrs until 2020. Was rock solid in my experience, couldn’t get my tuner to get it to leak on the dyno each time I had the car tuned over the years. Finally swapped out to the Cobb unit not because anything was wrong with it, but I just needed something to do with my stimulus money :). Ive been happy with the Cobb in that the install was painless and it has also worked flawlessly. The Synapse ones look killer as in, artfully designed, but I just went with a known quantity because I have a long history with the brand.

Still original OEM in my daily, don’t see any reason to swap it out.

I just called Surgeline about this and for my VF52 they didn't recommend an aftermarket BPV unless something was wrong with mine. For a larger turbo, yes, it's not a bad idea to get a nice one. They recommended me the Cobb one.

I think anything over oem level boost may warrant a better bpv. The 20g is putting out more air than a vf52 from what I have researched. The VF52 is like the best oem turbo which that bov is probably designed to handle. Anything more and you might get issues.

I am now trying to decide between the cobb and synapse. Anyone see any big things that stand out between the two? What are pros and cons of each? Cobb is full bpv it looks like, what about the synapse?

I think the main thing that tips the scales for me in favor of the Cobb is the multi piece design of the Synapse. Looks to be multiple parts to put it together. It looks well built but there’s a lot more to leak there seems like. The Cobb is one piece unit so it would seem that maybe there is less to fail?

I was thinking the same thing the synapse looks like its made for multiple applications based on the parts you get, while the cobb is designed for a specific application. There isn't much literature on the synapse website about the part so its a bit of a turn off imo. What is port a and port b?

At the end of the day I want all performance, and the car is designed to run that wasted pressure back into the system, which seems like an obvious no brainer from an engineering pov. Noise vs wasted energy??? I don't need a bov, the Cobb seems the best buy, lots of literature and like shralp said a lot less places for problems. I like a company that can actually explain what their product is doing.

Here are some of the resources I used when I decided to go with the Syncronic DV.

I agree, they aren't that great at marketing it, but I love the engineering behind it.

I would suspect the Cobb is easier (not really any configurations, just go), but I liked the engineering behind the Synchronic DV so I decided to try them.

I have the Turbosmart Kompact and she's been good so far on breaking in my engine. She actually reminds me of my Tial bov in my s13. No need to adjust it, you just run a vacuum to it and she's ready to go. I personally think it's a great upgrade over the stock plastic one. Especially for the price you can't beat it.

Cobb LF all day long. It’s been tested to presssures way above what you’ll ever see. It’s small and quick to vent, which is key. You want to release the pressure as quickly as possible in order to prevent compressor surge.

If you want something that has the option to vent - I have an original Cobb Xle on my shelf and I’ll sell it for $125 shipped.

I contacted Grimmspeed, cause I got a grimmspeed ic, and they recommend the perrin actually. They also hinted at grimmspeed coming out with a bpv within the next month or so and I love me some grimmspeed products!

There reply

"Thanks for reaching out! I would recommend PERRIN. Otherwise, I would also stay tuned within the next month or so for GrimmSpeed. It would make sense for us to release one to go with our TMIC/FMIC Kits"

  • 1 month later...

if replacing a stock one, and planning on full recirculation, is a tune necessary?

I'm sure it's always recommended, but in case of replacement of OEM with same functionality is it required.

The one issue with the Synapse I was concerned about is fitment with an aftermarket Grimspeed Intercooler.

I like the engineering and fun noise of the Synapse.

What are people using with a Grimspeed Intercooler?

I’m using the Synapse with the Grimmspeed TMIC. It’s a close fit, but part of that is I have a radium FPR and sensor that takes up more room next to it than stock. I can find a picture when I get back to my computer later.
