Misfire in all cylinders, please help.

Recommended Posts

I purchased my LGT about a year ago, I truly love my baby! 6 months after purchase the engine blew, I had a quarter size hole in piston 3 and damaged valves( I'd imagine maybe this was the valve issues the LGT has. The motor was replaced thru my warranty. They installed a used motor with approx 66K.

After the install I have not been able to drive the LGT more than 4 days without getting a CEL for misfires in all cylinders. It's been to 2 dealerships and still they haven't gotten it right, smh...

I've replaced the plugs, after that it was a cracked TMIC, replaced that, new ground straps were also replaced. I'm sure the Subaru tech checked my injectors as this is notorious.

The car still has power and it stumbles as if it was running an improper mixture,

The car is stock except for a KN typhoon intake system.

Please any advice would help this is getting very aggravating .

I'm new to forums so if there are details or missing Info please don't hesitate to ask.

I'm just confused what can make EVERY cylinder misfire, I can't imagine I have 4 bad injectors or 4 bad coil packs, just sounds odd....

Id say no to that, I got the intake used of CL for 60 bucks, since it was an easy install i just installed it, I have the original assembly in garage, but I had the CEL prior to the intake. I wasn't aware I had to tune the car for the intake.

I'll swap the stock intake back on today & clear code ( I have a scan tool ) and update on here. I hope its something this easy,,,,,,,,,fingers crossed.

BTW I do have a service appt for Monday as well, but just tired of going back and forth I've been dealing with this since 12-20-12, smh

Thanks for the responses guys.

Ok so I removed the K&N system and replaced it with the stock components & reset the codes. I ran the car around town for an hour, no problems noted. Got gas drove another 15 mins, no problems noted. Just took it around the block no problems noted. Im gonna go out later about a 3hr drive jump on the freeway and road test.

Thanks again

Update, after 3 hours or so of driving and having my kids in the back I felt no misfires on freeway, no real problems on town streets no CEL and CEL flash. I felt a slight stumble but not anything like I was experiencing.

Thanks to Doccrowley for reply. And thanks to all that chimed in.

Im still gonna keep an eye on it, thou.

I'm having very similar issues: Here is a thread I started a few weeks ago.

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/troubling-problems-misfire-all-4-cylinders-201528.html

I would do all the routine stuff, check for leaks after the intake to the TB, remove and clean the MAF sensor, pull and check the plugs etc... There are many things that could cause misfire...

FYI I still haven't fixed my problem but I think I'm close.

Mmmm,

I hope I'm close too lol, I've changed the plugs, then I had a crack on my TMIC, then u had a bad ignition wire that some idiot decided not to solder so instead they electrical taped it together. I also cleaned the maf, dealer has the car but they haven't figured out cause of misfire's in all cylinders. I hope they have something tomorrow bc this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Update: I got the LGT back yesterday at noon. They documented a road test of 120 miles. I then drove it 100 miles in town. I then drove to NYC and back approx 200 miles or so. I did this with 4 passengers and myself. No problems at all. It was odd to drive more than 50miles without a CEL,lol. I will continue to monitor the repair but to me it seems like its finally after months and months, I believe the car is fixed! Here is the rundown of visits and the final repair.

1. Blown Engine Cylinder 3 RIP! (10-2-12)

2. Engine replaced (after warranty battle and battle 12-20-12, I was in a Ford Fusion,Yuck!)

3. CEL 12-21-12 Misfire 1-4, diagnosis loose vacuum hose.

4. CEL 12-27-12 Misfire 1-4, diagnosis low qt of oil? (oh boy )

5. CEL 1-3-12 Misfire 1-4, diagnosis need to replace plugs?? Not covered ??? 320.00 Yea right.

At this point I Never Go back to this dealership.

I replace plugs, still 2 days later CEL back same issue.

Now im at another Subaru Dealer, its starts as follows.

1. 2-6-13 CEL Misfire 1-4, diagnosis missing ground straps both sides. (huh sounds like a bad engine install....) Not covered 135.00 later.....

2. 2-13-13 CEL Misfire 1-4, diagnosis cracked TMIC air tube, verified they called me down to view it on car. Not covered 590.00 later.....

3. 2-19-13 CEL Misfire 1-4, diagnosis short main ignition wire, wire electrical tapped and intertwined, not soldered at connector.(huh again sounds like a bad engine install.....)

Charge= 0.00

4. 2-26-13 CEL Misfire 1-4, diagnosis bag ground at or near Ecu, checked and repaired ground. Like I said in the beginning I feel it is fixed, Ill update if it gets jacked up again and Ill update a week from today best of luck mmmmm.

Good luck on this. Electrical issues always suck to diagnose :(

For what it's worth, since they put in a new-used engine, what were the compression numbers on the replaced motor?

I'm gonna dig up the compression ratios, on a side note....intake back on, car still running like a champ. It's nice to have it running for more than 24hrs in a row now, lmao
