Leg4Life
So a couple months back I replaced the timing belt and water pump and about 2,000 miles later I got a check engine light on my Subaru Legacy spec B. The check engine codes that came up were the infamous cylinder misfire P0301 p0302 p0303 P0304. Everything on YouTube pointed to spark plugs and coil packs so what did I do? You guessed it I went out and bought high performance coil packs and brand new spark plugs ran it they need to be switched out spark plugs anyway coil packs I'm still wondering if I need to get new ones or not anyway but update upgraded anyway. So after that I replace the coil packs and spark plugs reset the codes. After about a week or two the check engine light comes back on I go to check the codes cylinder 1 and 3 are still misfiring P0301 and P0 303 so I gave him some time to think about it and since 2 misfire happen after I change the timing belt it was probably related. So my friend and I went ahead and did a quick care down and we found out that for some reason the timing belt had been off time by about one tooth must have happened because the Belt Line marks weren't lined up or something. So we went ahead and got the Bell on there and make sure all the marks lined up took pictures and now after 3 days there is no misfire on any of the cylinders seems to have a little more power to it which is awesome probably because of the new coil packs I bought but also that all the cylinders are firing when they should be everything's on time and I have a few photos that I can share with you guys. Hope you enjoy. Sent from my LG-LS997 using Tapatalk
Max Capacity
By looking at those pictures, 6 & 7, I'd say #1 & 3 cylinders are out of time. Do not worry about the marks on the belt, the belt doesn't care where the white marks are. the belt just goes around. Please read your post and see if you can write it so it's easier to read. Oh FWIW, My wagon still has the coil packs the car came with, stock packs are great. You'll want to make sure the connections to the coil packs are clean and tight. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). Leg4Life
Thanks for the feedback! I don't see an edit button but wanted people to have an idea of what i went through. I saw one other guy seemed to be working on a similar issue for about a year and was still trouble shooting and documenting. I hope this entry helps. Alroundj
Question about the tension on the pulleys. Im fighting with a 2.5sohc that wont stay running. Runs ok...for about 30seconds then skips horribly and stalls. It looked as though the right side pulley was off by a couple teeth. Ive decided to reset the belt just to make sure I didnt hurt those valves before spending the money on new belt. What Im finding is the pulley on the side that was off, has some play in it. In other words, with belt off..you can easily turn it maybe an inch in either way.. is that normal?? Or is something broke inside? The cylinder 2/4 pulley does not have that play. Help appreciated! relative4
That is normal.
JmP6889928
Max is correct. You are off in picture 6 and 7. You have to feed the belt the correct way when installing in order to have it all roll itself into place correctly. There is a link to a very good youtube video in my IDEA sticky that shows timing belt installation and gives you a couple of good tricks.
m sprank
Some people should not work on cars and should seek professional assistance with the work. Education is not free, mechanical work is not always easy, the oe manuals leave out specifics on purpose as the techs have access to other specific databases and You Tube is Fake News for the most part. Max can assist. SMHLOL.
