Carmania24
After saving and deciding and going back and fourth with what I want to do, I went for a fully built motor. EJ257 Block B25 Heads STI Crank VF52 (for now) Ported, polished, and crank is balanced as well Pictures attached as well as part list. Sorry for the bad quality pictures, something is wrong with the camera. Let me know your thoughts!
Tehnation
can't go wrong with the 2.5 turbo. 2.5>2.0 in my opinion. The gates kit is iffy, I run that, but I have an older one. Newer ones use cheap bearings. I think everyone uses some other company now. Look at the bearings and tensioner to see if its made in japan, I think the company is ntn, they make the good stuff. Oil pump might be a bit to big, I would go with a 10 or 11mm. Here is a video from flatirons, the acl is probably good though because its modified a lil. Otherwise it looks good, make sure you use assembly paste or lube everywhere, on the cylinder walls as well! And prime the engine with oil before starting, don't just try and crank it without the fuel pump. Get a 10 dollar garden sprayer from home depot and rig it to the front oil pressure stem, then turn the motor by hand several times. Tehnation
Hmm I noticed you used the .001 bearings! I'm not sure if thats the way to go vs std size! Any reason why? Did you measure your clearances or plastigauge it? More oil isn't necessarily a good thing. Most of the big boy engine builders use std size bearings or aim for oem tolerances but on the higher side of tolerance. A lot of people were going the .002 route for a while but I believe that changed so it may not be the way to go. I doubt its a serious issue, but it crosses into the realm of the performance/reliability curve I believe. Where you can get same performance but more reliability with more efficient oil clearances. Thats what I gathered, but the subaru community is a clusterfuck of information, so you have to draw your own conclusions some times. I would plastigauge and see where you are at before jumping straight to the .001 bearings. If you have some knowledge on the subject I would love to hear it because I am in the middle of rebuilding and I had thought about going .001 as well, but I got a std set, and i'm going to plastigauge first with the std to see what i'm working with. 05/b25 oem specs Connecting rod oil clearance: Standard 0.017 — 0.045 mm (0.0007 — 0.0018 in) Crankshaft oil clearance: Standard 0.010 — 0.030 mm (0.0004 — 0.0012 in) Edited October 31, 2020 by Tehnation
Tehnation
basically if your clearances are to big its not good for the long run. plastigauge, its cheap and simple, a lot of people don't subscribe to it but if you know how to use it its pretty accurate.
