I am now making and selling 3/4" PVC spacers for the F&R of the Legacy. $35 shipped for a pair; $60 shipped for all 4.

Original post:

Last weekend, I sold some Alpine speakers on here, and the buyer wanted me to throw in a set of adapters that I had made, just to make his life easier. I agreed, but needed other spacers for my replacement speakers, so I ordered up a set of the Kartboy speaker spacers/adapters that they market for the 2005-09 Legacy.

I received these spacers, but before I install them, I wanted to be sure that I got the correct parts.

I have tried to reach them by telephone without success.

I would welcome any thoughts on whether I have received the proper spacers, or suggestions on best to proceed.

The spacers that I received are roughly triangular, with 3 holes at the corners that are spaced equally one from the others. While that may be the correct mounting pattern for some Subaru vehicles, I think that we all know that the mounting holes in the front doors are not equally spaced on a Legacy. I compared these to the factory speakers, and only one hole at a time matches up with the factory mounting holes.

While I am not opposed to slight modifications, I prefer to enter into a situation where I must drill into my vehicle with some sort of prior knowledge. For these to be marketed as an item for the 2005-09 Legacy is misleading, given that they are not a direct fit in the Legacy. There is no mention made on the Kartboy website indicating that they are anything other than a direct fit. These are not even close.

In 15 minutes, I made better-fitting spacers out of 5/8" PVC material. While the construction quality of the kartboy spacers is outstanding, the fit is a 3 out of 10. Not what I would expect from a company of their reputation.

Here are what my spacers look like:

Yeah I had the same problem when I ordered a set for my car. I had to drill two holes into the spacers to make them fit right. I was a little irritated by it but I already had the car apart so it was too late to turn back. Once I got the holes lined up the install went fine but I can understand your irritation with this. Especially since I remember seeing your original spacers when I was looking for ones to order, you did a nice job on those.

Thanks for the compliments.

In reference to fit, I actually got an email rom the owner of Kartboy, and he was really cool about it. He apologized and offered a full refund. They are closed until the 15th, but when he gets back, I am going to offer to send him my prototype set and let him use them to mass produce ones that fit the Legacy.

Right on, good to hear that both KB and you are working together on this...

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, KB decided not to move forward with these, so I am making more of the ones like I made in the past (and what I use in my car).
