How many people would be interested in a truly proper flip key?

It would be assisted open AND close. It would be machined from Aluminum, and would be based on the All-In-One key.

An optional addition would be anodizing in any color you wish.

How much would you be willing to pay for the key?

Would you want it in a "ready to cut" format, or would you guys be OK disassembling the All-In-One yourselves and installing things?

Any dealership could program the key for you.

I guarantee you that it won't be e-bay cheap. If there is interest, I'll look into putting something together.

Overall size would be not much larger than the All-in-one key when closed. Since it'd be all metal, it'll be a bit heavier than the stock key. I think a heavy key is a great feature, though. Nice and solid feeling, not cheap plastic.

Vote in the poll!

My wife's Impreza has the tear-drop remote.

Would anyone be interested in a similar flip key that utilizes the tear-drop bits?

This way, all you'd need to do is cut the key blank at any hardware store, and disassemble/assemble the key to insert your tear drop circuit board (hopefully without modification) and immobilizer chip.

I can also do the assembly for you, but it would cost a few extra dollars for my time.

So far I have 4 "Yes" votes, and no "No" votes. But no replies?

It would assist open and closed. I haven't decided if it would be a swing-key, like the VW/Audi key, or if it would be an out-the-front key. I'm leaning towards an OTF key, because it's more compact and, well, awesome.

It would probably have a little slide button. Push forward to open the key, pull back to close it. I could probably do a push-button though.

Something like this:

I'll put together a design for the All-in-one key first, and see what it'll cost.

I might make a prototype printed in 3D, just for proof of concept and videos. If interest is high, I'll see about setting up a small production run and churning them out.

What kind of price would you guys be willing to pay?

Would you guys prefer a button, or a slide? The slide is easier, for sure, since I already have the mechanism drawn. The button would require more effort, but I'm sure I could figure it out.

I am interested in this. I would prefer the tear drop approach as it would minimize the associated cost and avoid dealing with the dealer. Given your description of the end product, I have the impression that you intend these to be quality pieces. If you combine that with having to buy an all-in-one and have it programmed, you are looking at a pretty expensive key. Regardless of the quality, I would be hard pressed to pay very much for your product if I had to buy all the other stuff too. If I could just disassemble my current remote and use that one, I would be fine with paying a fair price. However, it is hard for me to tell you how much without seeing the finished piece (preferrably a video to see the functioning and general quality. I would prefer the slide to the button...

Regards,

Matt.

I just took apart the tear drop remote from my wifes car. That will definitely take more time to design. In the All-in-one, the button section is more of a module. The transponder is also easily accessible without destroying the key. The teardrop key would require you to permanantly mutilate one of your keys. I think I can do it, but the overall size of the key will be larger than the one using the all-in-one bits. The tear-drop is definitely on the back burner since it'll take more time. I won't invest the time to design something if no one is going to be interested. There might be a chance that the PANIC button will no longer be available though.

The side-flip vs. OTF is kind of moot. It's not about cost effective, they'd both cost about the same. It's getting the size where I want it, and getting the action correct and the features I want.

Personally, I prefer the slide idea to the button. The slide is much more "intentional", if you know what I mean.

I won't settle for less than "looks great", so that's easy. I already have the design concocted, I just need to CAD it and then sit in front of a mill and make it. I fully expect it to work awesome, look great, and be utterly reliable. The hardest part, believe it or not, is choosing the stupid little things. Overall case design, hardware, things like that.

i think this would be a winner. i think the trip to the dealer/$$$ for programming is what turns off most of us pre-08 guys who quietly want/would prefer the flip.

i love aluminum; an Al-cased option would be sweet.

OK, I'll look into the teardrop key as well.

Model for the All-In-One (AIO) key is almost done. I should have the teardrop and AIO models done before next weekend. I'm looking at a pair of working prototypes before the end of May.

For the AIO, the install should be nearly bolt-in. The Teardrop will require you to cut apart one of your keys to get the transponder out, and you may or may not lose the panic button.

I'd love a heavy key, I hate the plastic feeling, it just feels like your not actually starting the car lol. That knife is awesome btw, and it'd be AMAZING if you could get a key like that, i dont care if id have to lock the car with the key instead of the remote just for that

This sounds pretty cool. Personally, I'd prefer the button to the slide, but anything is better than what I've got now. Losing the panic isn't that big of a deal, can't remember ever needing it.

If this is between $50-75, I'd definitely get one.

Fortunately for the 23 people who voted YES, the powers that be at LGT.com granted me "Homebrew Vendor" status. So I am allowed to make and sell these things to you all!

I'll be sure to post updates and pictures as soon as things are ready. I think I'm going to start milling the AIO model very soon.

To get you guys even more interested, there are a few options. You can get them anodized in any color you'd like. And I can even engrave them practically anyway you'd like as well.

You'll reuse your transponder, and if you have the all-in-one key then you'll reuse your key blade as well. I MIGHT include uncut blades for the AIO keys, but I haven't decided yet.

For the teardrop keys, I will try and find a source for transponders, and will probably include the key blade. All you'd have to do is get the key cut, and have the transponder programmed.

I think this is the most "correct" approach to the problem. I'd rather people not have to mutilate one of their keys. If I do it this way, then you can easily "go back to stock".

Pricing will be set once I have models done and verify the prototype. I have a target range, but I'll wait until I have official pricing before I release anything.
