New here. I have a header question

Widespread Subaru

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I'm new here and this is my first post. I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i. It has a SOHC and an automatic transmission.

I am wanting to add aftermarket headers and exhaust. I found headers on Borlas website that state they fit the 2.5i and the 2.5GT. The part number is 17183

http://www.borla.com/products/product_detail.aspx?prod_sku=17183

Now here is my dilemma. I have checked other websites and many of them state these headers are not compatible with my vehicle. I called Borla and they couldn't give me a definitive answer. He said that he has heard this before and the only thing he could think of is that the headers are built for a dual port engine and the only reason they wouldn't fit if is that the SOHC engine has a single port.

So my question is does my engine have a single or dual port? Will these headers fit? And if they don't fit could someone point me in the direction to headers and exhaust that would fit my car.

I look forward to responses and conversations in the future. Thanks.

On a 2.5i headers will be a waste of money. Do yourself a favor and put the money to use on cosmetic items. Nice car, my wife has an 07. I drive the 05 GT version.
If you woke up today, you have another chance to do it right.

That's rubbish... Get a header if you want it.

There used to be a cheap borla replica header for around $200 on ebay (had one on my old RS and spoke with buyer after I sold it 3 years later, and it finally cracked). With a borla CBE it sounded better then any Subaru I've ever had. No performance value like has been said, but it's a great mod knowing it's purely for sound and not having spent +$400.

Welcome to the site!

Here is an excerpt from a sticky in the Naturally Aspirated forum on this site, which I hope gives you some of the information you were looking for. Check out the rest of the FAQ for some general information in other performance areas for the 2.5i

"3) Exhaust

“Where can I get the boxer rumble that Subaru is so famous for?” the rumble that is infamous on WRX and STi’s (also the LGT) is due to the unequal exhaust length (UEL) headers. Unfortunately the 2.5i features equal length headers and thus does not emit the noted boxer rumble.

However, there are several aftermarket exhaust options available, though they will not give your car the boxer rumble sound, they can still change the exhaust note favorably. All axleback options for the LGT will bolt right up to the 2.5i. The SPTv2 CBE has also been successfully installed on a 2.5i as well. This link http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...on-130408.html contains a compilation of aftermarket exhausts for the 2.5i

Aftermarket UEL headers can be fit onto the 2.5i, but at the moment there are no plug and play solutions available. See this thread for more details on how to customize the header setup for the 2.5i http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...ei-153134.html"

I think that what the other members above are just simply trying to recommend to you is that if you are looking for a worthy investment towards performance, you shouldn't be looking at headers. If your mind is set on headers, just check out above.
