LED's for Turn Signals

Recommended Posts

I recently posted in another thread about how I have ordered some LED lights with "no resistors required" for my Premium, and I received them yesterday. I envisioned in my head that they would just be the LED bulbs, or maybe would have the load resistor and controller built in line, and I was right.

I ordered 2 sets total to replace all 4 of the turn signal bulbs. I decided that to do a fair test to make sure they work properly, I was just going to try the new LED's on just the passenger side, and make sure there wasn't any hyper flash or any other unwanted effects (and also makes it much easier for comparison pictures and videos!) and they work perfectly!

Installation was as simple as replacing the bulbs, and I'm not going to go into detail on how to do this part. The built in load resistors do need to be attached to somewhere that is metal on the interior, and I just used double sided tape.

First picture is from the rear, and you can see the difference with the brightness on the passenger side.

Second picture is from the front, and same thing, you can see how much brighter the passenger side is.

And now for the fun part the comparison videos.. or gif files so you don't have to click on the video!

This is a slightly more expensive option, but does give a very good result as you can see. I've posted the links below for the ones I bought as well as another alternative that is a bit cheaper, but doesn't have as good of a lumen output.

Here is the link for the ones I bought. It looks like the price has gone up since I bought them a couple days ago to $55 for a pair: http://www.ebay.com/itm/No-Resistor-Require-Amber-7440-LED-Bulbs-For-Front-or-Rear-Turn-Signal-Lights-/131174313666?hash=item1e8a992ec2

From the same seller, but a cheaper version for $46 a pair: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Amber-No-Resistor-Require-7440-CREE-LED-Bulbs-For-Front-Rear-Turn-Signal-Lights-/131263946459?hash=item1e8ff0dedb

If anyone has been deciding whether or not to do this, hopefully this will help your decision out!

Looks fantastic!! So much brighter, really wanting a set for my fronts.. For the front, did you wrap the connectors with anything to keep water out? Seems like a possible problem with the original socket out in the open.

Never knew photobucket let you upload videos, going to use it to upload my tail as turn vid to keep people from stalking my YT channel:lol:

I did wrap those connectors in electrical tape... it was a pretty good fit, but wanted to make sure to keep the water out. The smaller connectors that go to the LED's themselves had some heat shrink tubing that I was able to use to seal those up.

I had no idea about the videos either! I decided to try it today, and was surprised it worked! I didn't want to use my YouTube channel either and am glad it worked!

Another option is to swap out the standard flasher relay and put in a special relay designed for LED bulbs:

This way you can use the regular LED bulbs without the load resistors.

The reason I went this route is that there is no flasher relay in the 2015, it's all a part of the ECU. Trust me, this was the first thing I checked on when I got the car!

Just ordered two sets from iJDM for $99.98 with free shipping.

Sweet! Thankfully this was probably one of the easiest mods I have ever done on a car, and am really pleased with the results! Let me know how it works out for you!

Forgive the basic question guys, but I'm wondering if simple mods like this void the warranty?

It was clear in the thread about sway bars that it would and you'd want to swap it back out before a dealer repair, but what about bulbs?

I'm a novice and know nothing about electrical systems and am nervous about messing something up because of my ignorance.

Sway bars will not void your warranty if you use a Subaru sway bar...aftermarket...maybe but laws against that too called the M&M Act. No body in their right mind will swap out a SB before taking it in for service. Changing bulbs have ZERO impact on your warranty as bulbs are not a warranty item anyway. It's a bulb...not a super charger:)

So I installed a different set of "plug and play" LED blinkers on my Legacy today. I've previously owned the set of iJDMtoy LED's shown earlier in this thread and they worked great, but I wasn't 100% happy with the color (too light). So this time I went with another option, this is basically the same idea, but a different brand, different connectors / harness.

The install was interesting, the front blinkers installed very easy, true plug and play, the back set however I'm pretty upset about. First the aftermarket socket that holds the bulb wouldn't fit into the housing, I tried whittling away at the plastic to see if maybe just a little off would make the difference.... nope. So I cut the existing wires, changed adapters so that the OEM socket was on the resister harness.

This LED / Resistor combo works great for the front blinkers, but the rear blinkers you need to tap into the stock wiring. I didn't enjoy cutting wires on the Subaru, especially since it was supposed to be a "plug and play" system, but I did it right with butt connectors and shrink wrap, so it should be okay.

Overall I'm happy with the end result, I think the LED's are little brighter than the iJDMtoy ones, also the color is a darker color of orange which was the big deal for me. Here are the links to what you would need, as well as two youtube links from the video I took. Overall cost is about $10 cheaper than the iJDMtoy LED option, however it will take you about another 30-60 minutes to cut / change adapters.

I do like the amber color, and I think you are right that they are a bit more of a true amber color than the iJDMtoy ones. My biggest worry was that I didn't want to have to modify any of the wiring on mine, and I had read reviews saying that the sockets didn't quite fit.

If I didn't want to have to mess with the original wiring, I would have probably gone the same route as you on this. Either way, it looks very good! :)

Sorry, but no way in hell am I cutting wiring. I love mods and have been doing them for over 30 years but to replace bulbs and have to modify anything because the color is a bit deeper isn't what I'm looking for. Glad it worked out for you in the end and may also keep many others from buying the JDM Star set-up for this very reason. Looking forward to iJDM bulbs to come next week and be truly plug-n-play.

I had no problem splicing wiring in my 2nd gen... but since that was almost a 20 year old car, I wasn't as worried about it. I had also done emergency lighting mods on previous cars where there was no choice but to cut and splice wires, but that was also for a specific purpose, and was geared more towards my own safety as well as others safety on an emergency scene.

For my new one, I'm the same way as you that there is no way in hell I would cut any wires!
