Code coming up is P0021, often related to the oil control valves or clogged banjo bolt filter. Want to make sure the filters not clogged and starving the turbo of oil. Car idles rough when not moving or during a stop light. Throws the CEL and will lose power while stopped or while driving, all of a sudden you can floor the gas and nothing will happen. After you pull off and restart it will run fine again for awhile. The throttle is also laggy like you can give it some gas and it won’t steadily accelerate, it will hesitate for a second and then almost jerks all at once. Could be a vacuum leak or boost leak issue.

Also throws engine codes

P2138 and P0420.

Took it to shop and they said that by banjo bolts were probably bad and wanted 325 to replace them and they also said that if that didn’t fix the problem I might need a new turbo entirely. Any advise? Thanks

I had the same problem but without any trouble cods appearing [emoji53]

Question regarding the installation of an after market VF40 turbo replacement: I have the option of ordering new water pipes & bolts for the turbo coolant system separately. My guess is that the water pipes are sold separately as the OEM ones can often be reused. That said, from experience, would you suggest I order these new parts in addition to the turbo?

O.K. looking for opinions/advice. 2008 XT purchased March 2018. 82xxx miles at that time. Pulled turbo banjo and screen had a few particles but not plugged. Replaced with screen intact. Today with 118XXX miles I pulled turbo banjo and screen is perfectly clean. You can see through it when held to light I mean it is clean. I will remove screen this time. So should I 1. ride it till it grenades. or 2. Get a new or JMP VF46 and a revised tune from Cryo. I have stage 2 cryotune now and very rarely see any fine knock learn.

if you're not seeing any symptoms or having any problems, i see no reason to buy a new turbo just for fun. if you're super concerned, you can drop the oil pan and see if there's metal/flake in it. Otherwise a Blackstone oil analysis can help tell you if there's metal in your oil (and even what kind of metal to help determine where it's coming from, i.e. bearings, etc).

the stock turbos tend to give warning signs on their way out.

I could suck start a snow blower.

Blackstone at 109xxx miles showed normal wear. Think I'l just keep driving it til something shreds.

Update. Blackstone at 125xxx shows high aluminum, high chromium and high iron so I guess it's time to get a new shortblock. So question do I send My VF46 off for a rebuild or go with a new VF52? I am also now researching shops to do the head work in My area (S.W. of Binghamton N.Y. ) if anybody wants to weigh in . Also go with TGV deletes or leave them alone?

Maybe think about the cost of the rebuild, as money you were going to spend, now add some to it and the vf52 is a lower price, because you were going to spend some of that money anyways, but you will need a tune.

Any long-established machine shop should be able to do your heads. May be, ask around repair shops, and find out who they send their heads off to.

Here in cold weather, the TGV's help with cold weather performance, until the engine warms up.

I got a good price on a VF52 so it's on the way. Cryotune will handle the E- tuning and They strongly recommend keeping TGV's stock. Is there any reason to not trust a machine shop that may not be Subie specialists with the heads? Also any reason to not use My good stock TMIC?

The vf52 and tune will blow the OEM tmic quickly.

If the machine shop has been around for many years, I would trust them. Maybe call your local dealerships Service manager and see who they send their heads too. Worst, they can say is no, we won't tell you.

Maybe ask if the Machine Shop will show you around their shop so you have confidence in their work.

You may want to start your own thread so it's easier to follow.

I appreciate the information provided here. If only I'd read this before hopping into a "new turbo" 2005 LGT wagon. Oh well, live and learn. Time to start reading through the engine rebuild threads. Heading towards an OEM short block most likely.
