copper or platinum plug?

Recommended Posts

I am replacing mine at 60k. Some of the newer ones get them at 60k.

I had the 30k service done a couple years ago. I'm guessing they changed my plugs to platinums then, because when I changed them again at 60,000 myself they were NGK platinums. I replaced them with NGK Iridium plugs after that. I havn't had a problem at all with my spark plugs causing codes.

Most of the newer cars mid 05 or 06 and up get plugs at 60k here.

Are there known issues with Iridium plugs causing problem over Platinum? What does SOA use ? I only wonder because I approach the 30K mark and I want to change the plugs out to keep her at optimal efficiency

^^ Hmm. I got it done at Bob Wade Subaru in Harrisonburg. I would figure the 30k service would be the same at any Subaru dealer. Either they changed them to Platinums at 30k or my car came stock with Platinums.

Not every dealership does the same for their service. I know mine is more thorough than the other in town and mine is about the same same price, maybe a tad less.

I know the newer ones come with platinums. We didn't change mine at 30k.

So when the time comes would you recommend I put Iridium or Plat plugs in?

I changed mine at 90k. two of them were worn down to nubs on the centers, the other two were pointy. When I pulled the plug wires off the the front drivers side and rear passenger side had oil on the boots. The other two were dry. In fact the two that were oily the plugs had the pointy center electrodes.

My dealer said they were NGK coppers stock. If the are platinum they should be good for at least 60k. You guys think the factory plugs are platinum??

Mabey I had better pull one and look.

GM uses platinums in their 3.8 liter motors with 100k change interval

Hey if you want to spend 50 bucks on plugs alone, not including the labor every 30k, be my guest :D

The 05's were not platinum. The Platinum plugs came with the i-active valve system in 2006. Now it is possible that all 05's that are going in for the 30k service are getting platinum plugs put in by the dealer hacks, but the owners manual does say copper for the 05. I'll double check tonight and scan it.

Turns out service manager did not know what he was taking about. Went to parts dept and they said ngk plats are the correct plug. also I read somewhere around here it best to at least pull plugs at each 30k so the dont fuse to the aluminum heads.

Can't say I read that, but many Subaru's are getting plugs done at 60k. The 6 cyl and turbo's are recommended by Subaru to get them at 60k. Of all the Subaru's I have seen the past few years, I can't say we have seen that happen, nor have my techs and they have been working on them since the late 80's. You have any links?
