Attention all.

The R180 rear differential mount (the unit underneath the front of it) is different than that of the R160. For correct fitment, angle and no clunking, you have to use the correct mount.

I seem to have lost the part number at the moment, but if I find my receipt I'll post it, and pics as well when I get the car back.

So you are saying if putting a R180 into out legacy or outbacks you have to have the R180 mount?

This is the first I have heard of this. Most say the R160 mount works fine if I remember correctly

Please advise, as I will be swapping mine in a couple of weeks.

For clarification, the stock mount will "work". As in the car will drive. The issue I found was that when getting into first or reverse I had lots of shuddering and clunking from the rear diff. Initially I thought it was my clutch but after narrowing the clunk down to the diff, I looked up the part number, saw it was different and ordered/installed it. In the short trip from one shop to the body shop for other work, I had no clunks. I will do more testing after the car returns.

I used the R160 mount. You can tell because unlike the diff itself, the crossmember looks exactly as dirty as the stuff around it:

I had some klunks when turning sharp corners and accelerating, but those went away when I added LSD juice to the Extra-S in the diff. I still get some klunks when drag racing but not as much. So I wonder if switching mounts would get rid of the last of my klunks.

The first time I launched, I was sure I'd blown an axle or three. Vrooom-screeech-BAM-BAM-BAM-BAM-BAM! By the time "holy shit was than an axle?" went through my mind, I was in 2nd gear and still pulling hard, so I kept going. I asked my girlfriend to watch for wheel-hop and she said there was none, so I figure it's the diff banging into something. Or maybe the transmission itself, but it sounds like it's coming from the back of the car.

Which crossmember did the rest of the 6MT swappers use?

Just to clarify, it wouldn't be the crossmember for the tranny, it would be the crossmemeber/cradle/mount for the R180 for those that swapped out the R160 and went the R180 route, Like in the picture below NSFW posted.

NSFW and Kaos, which drive shaft did you guys get. I still don't have a definite answer on the length of the driveshaft.

I did get a 2006 2.5i auto drive shaft but it seems that it will be short according to the measurements that have been posted.

I wish someone could take a measurement for me especially the spec B driveshaft.

Hammer Down posted some driveshaft info earlier in this thread...

http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3063025&postcount=24

That was enough information for me to get the right shaft from Driveshaft Specialist. Hammer Down ordered his from them and I just had one made to the same specs. It fit perfectly.

The first time I called, the person I talked to had no clue, so it might take you a couple tries. Hopefully there's enough info in his post to enable you to jar their memory if necessary.

Yea I knew about his driveshaft, I just chose to go the 2.5i route and hope its long enough.

I just can't figure out how the one I bought is going to be long enough. Someone posted that it needs to be like 63.5-63.88 or something and the 2.5i shaft I got was around 62-63 which seems too short.

I guess I will find out soon enough.

Although in your link you posted above it says that the front part was 24.12 and the rear part was 36.12 so that is only 60" so maybe it will be fine.

Look at this pic. again,

http://www.thrashdriveshaft.com/Imag...ion%202009.JPG

Measurement from the rear diff. flange to the center of the carrier bearing bolt ( 36.12" ). Then measure center of the carrier bearing bolt to the end of the tail shaft housing is (24.12") of the 6MT. You want 2" to 3" of the slide yoke inside the tail shaft.

36.12+24.12=60" ,The 60"is from the outside of the rear diff. flange to the outside of the tail shaft housing. The rest of the length of the drive shaft is going into the tail shaft. If your total length is around 63". That means you have 3" of penetration in the tail shaft housing. With out penetration your car goes nowhere & the drive shaft falls to the ground.

So mine should be OK then as its like 62.5

Yea I looked at that again before you posted this morning and realized yours was only 60 plus what goes into the transmission.

I think the one I got will be fine, unless there is something funky with the Outback XT length.

Thanks Guys

I bought a brand new Spec B driveshaft and axles. I wish I knew before I put it on that you needed the specs :(

Spec B rear diff mount part number is

While sorting through some random stuff in my garage I happened upon a diff mount that came with my 6MT package, still wrapped up. I guess we just ignored it since the stock mount seemed to fit well enough. :)

Looks like I can probably do my own A/B test without much trouble. Not sure when I'll get around to it though, my next few weekends are pretty busy.

You mean you had the all aluminum (r180 version) mount sitting there? :p:)

Put that sucker in!

I was looking under my Outback today and I am really worried about the R180 fitting OK with the S pipe on my Autospeed exhaust. I hope I don't have any fitment issues with that.

The exhaust right now is really close to where the drive shaft bolts to the rear diff. With the R180 being longer I hope it doesn't hit.
