Salt and brine.............the plows have salt spreaders on them and they use tank trucks that spray a brine mixture on the roads too......... Thankfully snow like this is pretty rare on the coast but we got it in spades the last few weeks....we have about 1 1/2 ft of it in the back yard. Using a hot water bucket it didn't seem that bad, but the temperature dropped & the driveway froze. I slipped and fell, never again.
