1stick3pedals
Hey everyone, figured it's about time for me to post up my progress. My car is a 2009 2.5i PZEV Legacy. I finished installing the AVO turbo kit back in April. Last week I finally had my car officially tuned at EFI Logics by Chris. The car is running great and it's a world of a difference. Currently in about $3800 including the pro tune at EFI Logics. I'll post up the dyno chart later but I'm making 175whp/176wtq on 93 octane at 4.2 psi max with an average of 3.6 psi. I'm planning on raising it to 6psi by the end of the summer, just breaking the car in some and making sure no problems arise. *Original power/torque values were around 126whp/127wtq. About 50 gained at the wheels. It was rather time consuming if you have never installed a turbo before. It was a great experience however and it turned out better than could be expected. A little green from the pollen. http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1619/dscn0316u.jpg I decided to go with a custom pipe here instead of the supplied black one. The black one fits fine, but was a little tight in some areas for my liking, as well as tight getting it in. The new set up was only $100 and it turned out perfect. http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/6933/dscn0317.jpg http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7117/dscn0318t.jpg http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/4078/dscn0319d.jpg http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/1692/dscn0322d.jpg I tried to get an undercarriage shot here, you can see the DP and kind of see the UP here. The process of installing took a couple of weeks to do since I was finishing up college. Between my dad and my self we probably invested around 24-36 hours total. The oil tapping of the pan was the most difficult part of this install. We ended up having to plug the original hole and tapping a new one due to the shape of the oil drain line. The original spot caused oil to back up into the turbo. Now there are no dips in the line and it works like a dream. I couldn't be happier, I can't wait to up the boost a little more, but I'm restraining from it for now haha. If there are any questions feel free to ask. This whole process was a huge learning experience, that's for sure.

Coyote_Lips
Nice, clean looking car. I almost installed a similar kit on my RS... but i'm too lazy. By the way, didn't you get some sort of federal tax break for the car being PZEV? Yup...
1stick3pedals
Thanks guys. As for the drag strip, I'm not sure that will be happening anytime soon. I honestly wanted to try to get into auto crossing though. There are plenty of reasons to go with the turbo kit over buying a GT. Not to come off rude, but I'd prefer to keep that discussion out of my thread. This thread is meant to show the progress of the kit on my car and to help out others that need questions answered or whom decide to head this route. And I'm not sure on the tax break question, I've been rather busy to keep note of that.

GEE-OTTO
Some questions for you : What oddball tools or parts did you have to get to complete the install? Would it be easier to buy another oil pan and tap it prior to install or do you need to have it on the car to mark the drain location for the turbo? GEE-OTTO
Also you didnt like the how close the block pipe was to the brake fluid reservoir?
Coyote_Lips
Has your fuel economy improved with adding the turbo? Any changes to the fuel system (pump, injectors) with this kit? Yup...
mike677
I think this kit doesn't require you to have to increase injectors and pump I may be wrong but just my. 02 cents and next you should put thicker gaskets and lower the compression to be able to increase boost a bit now that'd be awesome
LosAngelesLGT
I just want to see what the sucker will put down on 6psi and hell OP... WHATS THE DRIVING EXPERIENE LIKE??? All you said was "I couldn't be happier". You just put down 40% more power, HOW IS IT?? How is the suspension handling it? How are the brakes? Do you feel that you need to do more mods or do you feel the power is well balanced? How does it SOUND? Etc, etc...

1stick3pedals
To answer a few questions: As far as oddball parts go all I can think of at the moment is the tap tool and a torque wrench. Other than that it is just your basic wrenches and screw drivers to install. I'll ask my dad later if he remembers any other tools we may have used. The oil pan question. Either way you'll have to remove the original one. If you have the money go for it getting a new pan. But we used the original and it is working fine. If you want a picture of the tapping locations (including the one that didn't work) we used I can get those for you when I get the car back up on ramps. If you are on a budget though, just stick with the original. The black pipe was a little close to the clutch reservoir as well as some of the AC lines. It also made it impossible to remove the battery when the pipe was in without removing it. I went with the new set up because it had more clearance (helps me sleep better if you know what I mean), I like the look of it, and in the event I ever needed to get the battery out, removing one part is easier than trying to get the black pipe out. The black pipe is a tight squeeze getting it in. I did drive the car with it for some 40 miles, so there's no question it does work. Fuel economy has gone down. I used to be able to get high 20s (28-30) when I was on long highway drives. Right now my highest was about 24. I mean, I am getting on it a lot because I just can't resist. I'll update down the road if I get better, which I'm sure I will, lots of driving coming up this summer. I usually get decent mileage cruising around 70mph and keeping the car in higher gears whenever possible, so we'll see what happens. You need to upgrade injectors and the fuel pump. I went with DW 650cc. You can use 440cc I think, STi injectors? I decided to go with 650cc because it was the smallest size that Subimods in CT had, and it leaves room for more power gains in the future. As for the fuel pump, I was in the early pre-order group so I was hooked up with an LGT fuel pump from Japan. Fuel pump install was rather simple, best done if you have a spare set of hands though. Suspension is still handling the new power fine. I mean even before the turbo I wanted to upgrade my sway bars and swap to coilovers. So that hasn't changed. But it's not necessary. As far as brakes go, they are holding up still. I drive in a fashion where I don't use them much, between down shifting and judging distances allowing the car to slow down on its own. I am saving up for brembos though, which I had also planned on getting previously. I do notice that when I get on the throttle a little I am using the brakes more because I'm not used to speeding up as fast as the car does now. The stock brakes are good enough though, but I do recommend driving more carefully knowing that the car is a lot faster than it was before. The car essentially sounds the same as before when I had the cat-back. I still have the EL headers. The turbo and intake sound really good, I love hearing the turbo spool up. Driving experience. It is a world of difference. There is so much torque. Rowing through the gears getting on the highway can definitely get you in a lot of trouble now. I don't have to down shift going up hills anymore like Paul mentioned in one of his other threads. The car is just quick, from stop, rolling, everything. When I hold the gas pedal down half throttle, as it climbs up to 3k rpms you start getting pushed pretty hard into the seat and it just keeps coming, the power and torque is awesome. I'm attaching the dyno graph, hopefully it'll be legible enough. http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/8990/croppedturbograph51611.jpg Dashed lines are stock numbers. I guess the grid lines didn't get copied, you can make it out though still. About 170wtq at 2800rpm. 176 wtq at 4300rpm. 175whp at about 5700rpm. Hope these answers help! BigBlack-V
saw your thread over on Ctsubie, nice can man and nice work on the turbo. Hope to see you in Stafford at the WBM next month I was 0. And I'm still a zero.
GEE-OTTO
Look at the Torque curve man again a excellent product made by the AVO folks. I would like to see the bad tap location, was it too high on the pan causing the return line to have a bend that didnt drain fast enough or what ?
1stick3pedals
It wasn't too high, it's just the only way to route the line made a dip in the drain line. The headers kind of limit where you can run the line.
alaskajoel
wow that's a pretty clean install, and a real sleeper for sure! Those numbers are pretty great as well...I know dynos vary greatly, but isn't 175 about what a stock 2.0L WRX dynos at? Impressive!
