What did you do to your 4th gen. Legacy today? Vol - 10

Recommended Posts

Finished taking apart a Recaro Style XL Topline I bought on eBay. The seat was in great condition before it shipped but the seller didn't pad it at all, three of the plastic panels and various tabs snapped along the way. Since my previous dash repair turned out pretty well, I got it in my mind that I could try my hand at plastic welding to fix these up. The disassembly took two nights, a lot of learning as I've never dealt much with upholstery before and there was only a little online.

These particular seats have dual lumbar air bladders, heating, fans, leg extensions, side bolster, and height adjustment - basically everything I found wanting compared to the OEM seats. The covers are currently in the washing machine now. My cats love the support.

If you look at the second to last photo you will see how Recaro went about designing a bolster that circulates air. I will also be replacing both of its fans with Noctua NF-A8's. Last photo was from the auction listing.

All that pretty stuff and then you see that tmic...You do know it is leaking in the front corner right above the turbo ?

Is that just because of the characteristics of the crappy plastic stock intercooler or do you see something?? I am working on a front mount system so this will be upgraded soon hopefully...baby steps

The oily/dirty left front corner is an indicator that it's leaking at the seams by the turbo side.

It had looked like the crimps were coming off the end tanks, the oem TMIC are prone to leaking. Also, unless your doing an aggressive build, most here would recommend sticking with a TMIC.

Great info guys!! I appreciate the feedback!! I have an opportunity to pick up a front mount system for $600 that was why I was going that route but you guys say a good tmic will be suffice??

if you are able to buy a TMIC fortify kit, or master one yourself, stock TMIC will be fine for quite some power. After that there's plenty of aftermarket TMICs available. Recently I recall seeing some inexpensive chinese knock-offs full alum TMICs that gotten good feedback here.

It is less work but it also gets in the way. I've replaced my pitchmount three times. I sure was glad I have a fmic then.

I did too, but honestly taking FMIC off is quick, putting it back on is just a sequence one needs to remember - put the intake end in first, do not tighten, set on turbo side, loose the driver side bracket bolts, tighten the turbo side but not fully, tighten the turbo side fully, tighten the intake hose side fully, then align and tighten support bracket on the TMIC itself, then tighten two loosed bolts that support bracket on the intake manifold.

Wear gloves in order not to cut yourself with fins. Also do not grab TMIC on the surface as to not jam those fins.

that's all there is to it.

I've never had any issues removing or installing my Perrin TMIC. Any even so, hopefully your car runs well enough that you're not taking it on and off all the time. In 10 years I've maybe had mine off 5 times and it's almost always been to remove the dog bone to shift the engine/trans around.

It just seems to me that a lot of guys that go FMIC end up piecing things together and chasing boost leaks forever. You're introducing a lot of extra piping with the a FMIC, its just more prone to having issue IMO, especially buying a used kit you're just asking for a headache.

At $600 you're already pretty close to buying a new Grimmspeed TMIC, which is the most popular option right now, and you're guaranteed to get all new pieces that will fit your car. Perrin's can be found for pretty cheap. I bought my Perrin used 10 years ago for $450, it has served me well.

I've never had issues with boost leaks, then again I bought my ETS setup new.

Welp. Was going to replace all shocks tonight but LMP sent 3 shocks instead of 4. Even packaged the single shock by itself in a HUGE box clearly meant for 2-4 units. So I guess it'll just have to sit on those totally safe recently recalled harbor freight jack stands that definitely won't fail for another week or two... :coffee:

Finally have some real nice weather here where working on the car is a pleasure! A little mod installed and everyone should know who made this beautiful piece!

Now it's on the car, I can appreciate the fitment and just the care taken in getting the profile just right!

Installed Whiteline steering rack bushings (KSR207). Install wasn’t bad just tedious. Ended up using the 48mm passenger bushing but it looked like either would have fit fine. Minor improvement in steering tightness but mostly happy to get the 120k mile rubber bushings replaced. Great Whiteline quality as usual. Noticed a torn inner tie-rod boot that seems to be slowly seeping fluid. New/remanufactured rack may be next

Went on a spirited canyon run with a couple friends. The steering stability at 80+mph is insane... It was a good chance to get on the gas for a while before the oil change tomorrow. Only about 1500 miles in the last 6 months though lol

So your steering rack replacement sounds like it turned out very well! Lol

Replaced the front 2 axles with Raxels ( leaking boot on passenger side) original owner 132K. Replaced struts and shocks with OEM springs and Koni's, huge difference, set 1 turn off soft front and 1/2 on the back.

Not mine, but helped a friend with a problem on his 100k mile LGT. He got a clutch in the car a week ago, and it shortly started making horrific noises and leaking gear oil badly. Got it apart, and found all of the pilot bearing except the outer race missing, and a crack/hole in the trans that led behind the input shaft seal. Evenly spaced, deep, hemispherical indentations in the outer race imply that he pecked the inner race with the trans shaft and cross loaded it when cinching the trans down. Best guess is the vibes from running a chattering 6 puck clutch with the input shaft unsupported caused a fatigue failure in the trans casing. Ball bearing indentations in the flywheel. Never seen this happen. Friend's an experienced wrench, crazy stuff.

So I guess, be extra sure you've actually aligned everything right before you start pulling the trans to the motor?

Finally got around to swapping the suspension. Spec B front arms, Whiteline antilift kit & bump steer kit, Bilstiens w/Swifts. Also finished painting my Brembos and FINALLY put them on. Just need to convince the wife to help me bleed them and it’ll roll on it’s own again!

Disregard the missing sway bar. It’s going back on tonight. cd3f53c9ffca2644261d5b7da79f9b74.jpg
