Replace 2015 Homelink Mirror with new 2017 Frameless

Recommended Posts

I've got a 2015 2.5i Limited, and my brother just got a 2017 2.5i Limited. Of the few changes they've made, I really like the new frameless mirror. I know that these are produced by another company and are plugged in, and I was hoping that if I were to buy the new 50-genk80a model (Frameless), would it use the same plug as the older genk45am (or similar model number; there's many variations of it) model? The main difference in these is the design; otherwise they have exactly the same functionality.

I can't give you a definitive answer, but it wouldn't seem likely for Subaru to create an entirely new wiring harness for a simple mirror design change. Since the mirror was mixed in during the production run, this seems even more likely. As I shopped for my 2017 Outback (looked at Legacy too) I found a mix of mirrors on all the 2017 models.

I'd say order it online, via one of the discounted Subaru parts dealers, and give her a shot. Worst case scenario you return it.

I actually upgrade mine. I bought the base model with just a plain frameless mirror, no homelink or anything. However, to upgrade and get the mirror with compass and homelink, they wanted $300. Well, sorry, I wasn't going to spend $300 for a rear view mirror.

So, I bought the older version for $80 on Ebay, and $20 for an adapter plug. Works perfect.

Condor1970, could you provide links to the links to the exact pages you bought them from?

Also, it sounds as if you had one with no homelink or compass, though mine has all that albeit the last gen framed mirror. Does anyone know definitively if the plugs in the back are different or the same?

Looks like they are using them interchangeably, then? Unless it's only on top tier Limiteds. That bodes well for replacing it, though. However I'm going to upgrade to the '18 Legacy 3.6R this year, so probably not worthwhile anymore.
