I don't want to launch my car but I figure might as well do it now if there's gonna be more power. It's a cheap insurance. Because the needles bearing have know to go "ka-blooey"

Mother of Christ!!

Was torquing the water pump bolt to 8.9 ft-lbs and I felt a pop. And not the good pop from the torque wrench. 😡

Wtf wtf wtf!

How did it shear off? If there is even a slight edge in the center of that bolt, you should be able to reach in with an appropriately small flat screwdriver and just turn it out. There's no tension on it, so, don't freak out, yet.

Those threads look really flat, did you pull the threads out ? Time to drill it out and put a insert in there. Edited by Max Capacity

Yup i drill it out and tapped it to a M7 X 1 which is the max size you can send through the water pump.

 

But I made some progress on it today.

ARP head studs.

Assembly grease on stud, on both sides of the washers, and on nut.

Torque in sequence 30-60-90-90

I also put on the cam position sensors, crank sensor, OCVs, and a few other little things. And as much as I hated to stop I had to call it day.

I have the sti oil pump so I ran into the same problem cloudseed did. The coolant crossover pipe bracket didn't match so I made a little mark on the bracket and smashed it down in the vise. Almost looks like it was made that way.

As it comes to my surprise, I have a shit cam gear.

 

This is what a normal cam gear looks like on the inside. Note that the middle hole at 12 o'clock is the hole where the pin goes into. All together we have 5 holes.

This one shit out so much, it filled in the hole to the right with material and hollered out where the bolt goes through. Time for a new cam gear.

This has taught me a great lesson on inspecting everything before it goes back on your engine. I was lucky to even catch this.

You just going to get the one? Stock cams?

 

 

I have a set of used '04 STI cams. 100,000 miles.

Amsoil was all that was used.

 

cam gear. yeah the old ones checked out good. but i see where i said cam:redface:

Switch back to the stock headers and throw those cheap ones away. Doesn't matter what brand, I can tell from the welds on those, they're garbage.

 

I checked it over repeatedly. Especially after I found that cam gear all mangled up.

 

but heres some reviews on it. I wanna at least try them out. Not doubting your expertise, just going with what I see. I'll take some pics when I get to the shop.

FWIW, I see those on the floor consistently when I'm at PIA (my local shop) on the weekends. They goto the scrap dumpster.

 

There's a reason so many of us don't have headers, the least of which is the cost-benefit and high price of admission. Good headers are about $800 to start. The KB HHs are nearly 2x that. :eek:

Talked to Mike at Infamous Yesterday and I want to give a HUGE shout out to him. He answered all my questions. Took his time helping me and not once rushed me. I've also ordered 80% of my parts from him and even annoyed the hell out of him for that Ven Air bpv hose. He goes out of his way to help you. I'm still going down there to get a dyno tune though for sure though.

 

That would be my dream tune. I'll most likely get my break in and e tune from him. I read somewhere sometime ago he's great with the 5EATs

Yeah, I'll be doing the delicious flex fuel tune/kit, watch Bill work his magic with my car on the dyno.

Should make for some boring sounding bids with my quiet exhaust haha

I have the equal length version of that header. they are decent for what they are. get it ceramic coated and take it apart and use copper or red mr gasket in the crevasse and no leaks and no weld. mine doesn't leak from their at all. my leak is either the turbo to up or the up pipe flex.

Wrapped my wiring harness today. And soldered in my pig tails for my DW injectors. I think this is gonna clean up the engine bay real nice. I think I'm also gonna do this to the battery terminals and any other wires under the hood.

I went right over the old factory plastic crap so I don't lose any kind of heat protection.
