02 WRX Steering wheel swap problems

Recommended Posts

I have an 02 WRX steering wheel and I tried to swap it into my 95 L. I have heard that it is a direct swap but I must be missing something.

First of all the cruise control switches are wired differently but that won't be a problem since it looks like you can swap the second gen switch over to the wrx wheel.

Second, the airbag plugs are completely different. Maybe I could cut and splice the connectors?

Third, the clock spring posts are in a different orientation on the L wheel compare to the WRX so I guess I need the WRX clock spring? Will the WRX harness that goes through the clock spring plug into my L harness?

Fourth, the horn on the L wheel has a harness plug but there doesn't appear to be an obvious horn harness plug on the wrx wheel. How do you get the horn to work?

I would like to keep the airbag functioning.

Anyone know how to do this swap???

Found some info in the stickies...

Here's some pics.

Pulling the wheel off.

Wrx wheel on the left. The cruise control stalk wiring is more compact.

Here is the horn contact on the 95 L wheel. I couldn't find the equivalent on the wrx wheel. Also there isn't a separate wiring horn harness on the wrx wheel. Maybe it's built into the stalk wiring? There has got to be a way to make it work on the L, lol.

The airbag plugs are different. The wrx plug is on top. Maybe I can repin the wrx airbag. If anyone knows of an airbag wiring diagram let me know.

The clock spring pegs are rotated 180 degrees compared to the wrx peg holes. So I will probably need to get the wrx clock spring. Anyone know if a later second gen clock spring will work?

Dang it! It would have looked nice in there.

That's what it looks like it is turning into Zues! Have any advice?

Now the Airbag light is on. Why would that be the case? I just took the wheel off and put it back. I'll pull it off and make sure I connected the plug. Is that something that can be cleared?

I'm still searching for wiring diagrams so if anyone can find some let me know...

I'll also have to hit the junkyard to find a clockspring that has the pins in the right spot. Maybe a later year second gen. Or can I have the clock spring rotated 180 degrees and still have it function?

Not a direct swap! :p

Thanks for the links! I didn't realize it was that easy to swap the charges. I'll look into it further. I am selling my 95 wagon in a month or two so I won't be swapping the MOMO into it, but I will try and swap it into my 93 SS instead.

I still think the main issue with swapping the MOMO into the 95 is the differences between the WRX and L clockspring. The 95 might be a funky year for swapping as is appears that later models make for an easier swap.

Oh yeah. The wheel bolts right up no problem. The splines are standardized so any subaru wheel will work as well as other aftermarket wheels. This would probably work, lol:

I was hoping to keep the airbag though. There is probably a way to get the airbag to work. Especially after looking at the pics in the links a few posts above. My airbag light may be due to damage that occurred when I removed the wheel, or I forgot to hook the connector back up. I'll pull the wheel back off in the next few weeks and see if I can get the light to turn off. The main issue with the Wrx steering wheel in a 95 is the clock spring issue.

I have a buddy who has hooked up charges from later models to newer models. But he hasn't crashed head on to test it out yet, but it is likely that as long as you get the power and ground lines wired up properly functionality can be retained. Proceed at your own risk though! :)

I'm going to wire up the Wrx wheel to my SS and I think it should be fine. It's hard to fnd info on airbag charge specs though.

I had the Yellow arrow Momo for a couple of years. It's a direct swap for a 99' legacy. Same clock spring, same connector. The only mod that I had to make was the cruise control. The module that came on the 99' is slightly larger and the black housing that it is in needed to be dremel'd on one corner to fit it perfectly. The JDM momo's also fit my airbag connectors. Best combo IMO, was a USDM woodgrain 3rd Gen L. L. Bean wheel (which is the same size as the WRX wheel) and a silver Momo JDM airbag. The 99' worked like magic with a direct swap. I got lucky
