2005 Legacy - Bad Spark Plugs????

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

I have a 2005 Legacy Wagon 2.5i non turbo. Starting yesterday the engine started hesitating a tiny bit on acceleration while my wife was driving. That evening the check engine light went on and cruise control light started flashing

I went to Auto Zone today and they pulled a code - P0303. Misfire in cylinder 3. The woman said most likely plugs, plug wires or ignition coil issues.

The code is now off, but the hesitation continues - more noticeable when accelerating in 1st gear. Idle is fine. Starting seems ok too.

I bought the car 6 month ago. It has 150,000 km. The head was redone (with new plugs) around 90,000 km. Not sure if plug wires were replaced but they look to be in okay condition.

I removed the #3 plug today. I've attached a few photos if someone could give me their opinion.

I'm thinking to buy new NGK OEM plugs at around $9.99 each CDN. If that doesn't solve the issue perhaps replace plug wires?

A diagnostic seems to run a few hundred bucks, so why not replace plugs before going that route?

Thanks for any / all advice!

Whoops, I couldn't upload my photos of the plugs.

Here's a few links:

And I also checked the spark (though not sure how well I performed the test ... it was getting cold and I was tired):

Those plugs have a lot of life left - no wear or deposits. The gap looks about right, but should probably be gauged. The next most likely culprit is the wires; definitely use NGK - much better than OEM. It could be the coil pack, but those rarely fail.

Plugs don't seem to be the likely culprit. If you swap the coil pack with another cylinder and the problem moves, you've identified that the issue is the coil pack. I just replaced all of mine. Don't know if the 2.5i wears out at the same right as GT's.
