Generator pulley whining? H6 3.0 2004

Recommended Posts

Does anybody elses AC pulley click clack when it turns over? I thought it was the chain at first hahaha.

But more concerned over what I think is my generator pulley, is squealling. Is it likely a bearing? Is there anything I should try before taking it to a mechanic for an opinion?

Sounds like when timing belts are designed to whine when they are aged.

Its the pulley at the top of the engine bay second from the right.

Definitely the bearing, sprayed it with lubricant and its gone, so will get a bearing.

Compressor just goes clack for the AC when it switches on, goes off then on, Subaru saying thats normal.

Have issue with very slight misfiring which is almost unoticeable at idle, but when the car is in gear and braked you can feel a kind of shudder, the car doesnt wobble side to side as such, its so little its hard to describe. Subaru are saying the NGK spark plugs are only designed for 100kkm. Its pushing 200kkm so that could stack up, but $40 a spark plug, total cost $340NZD. ouchie, but its a beautiful engine I dont want it to cause catastrophic failure.

what the hell!!?

PLFR6A-11 are less than $10 USD here - WHY on pro-wholesale NZ are they $35 each? (That's about $25 USD!) supercheap auto didn't even list the part number.

Would it be cheaper to order them in the US and have them shipped over - that's an outrageous mark up and you're nearer to Japan than us!

http://www.ngkspark.co.nz/ claims the part is ILFR6B

which on Supercheap is $31.99

http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/Product/NGK-Laser-Iridium-Spark-Plug-ILFR6B/329948

which is still a rip off when that plus is $11.50 USD with free shipping here and under $14 at most autopart stores around here. Where do they get off on $32 NZD each for these plugs??!

Mate Im not even going to explain how screwed over NZ is for everything, considering out economy is 99nz/100au at the moment, I totally agree.

I dont know if Subaru were just rounding the price off the top of his head but yes $32. I dont have a torque wrench or any of the swivel/bend adpaters for my small socket set, sold it all as I now live in a 1 bedder with the Mrs, no space. The secure garage is flat, but the crappy management out of 16 fluro lights only 2 work, miles from my car.

Should I take it to Subaru just to confirm thats the cause of the slightly rough idle, from there I can way up if the $340 total is worth it or give it a crack myself?

It looks fairly simple, not as simple as my old ford escort 1.3l 30 years ago haha, but yeah, im not totally stupid mechanically. They will do the bearing for me for $30 which isnt to bad I thought, i could do it myself but again, tools, light etc etc.

Ok I just checked again, no squeaking of the bearing, but Im not sure which one it is now as I sprayed the two at the top in the middle of the engine.

Now the vibration, its really only noticeable when I put my hand on the car door, its like every 10 seconds it skips a beat, an ever so gentle vibration on the car door, i can faintly notice it with my hand on the engine cover.

Subaru said they must be replaced or it will blow my coils.

I know they should be, but its ever so faint and I dont have the cash right now but need to do a 1000km trip. Whats the likelyhood another 1000km is going to blow my coils due to the spark plug gap getting too big?

did I read you don't really have the right tools to do the job either?

If I was you and couldn't afford new sparks I would at least be pulling the old ones and giving them a buff with a wire brush, check the gap and set it if necessary and put them back - a visual inspection is definitely warranted. You don't want to have coil pack issues given the price of the spark plugs...

Now about them tools? You don't need a torque wrench but as you are the owner of a Subaru you should get yourself a half decent socket set with 1/4, 3/8 at least - not sure you would really need a 1/2" ratchet until you start trying to attack the underside of the car - but you need 1/4 and 3/8 ratchets and metric sockets 10mm 12mm 14mm (plus 17mm and 19mm are common on the Subaru but not for sparks) then you can tackle the spark plugs and a bunch of other stuff with that - oh and make sure you have the smaller of the two spark plug sockets most sets come with and 3/8 extension bars.

I know... I get the picture in NZ already - can you get a simple set like this without a mortgage?

So, LegacyCamper, with those kind of markups, do people in NZ shop online to get better prices? Or do you guys get screwed that way as well? I mean I'm sure it is expensive to ship things to NZ, but maybe it's worth it? I don't know.

We get screwed no matter what we do.

Low value items we can get from Amazon or wherever relatively cheaply but over 300-400NZD they sting you with tax and other import fees. My Q300 catback for example was 730ish USD before shipping from rallysportdirect. By the time it got to me here in NZ after the currency conversion and import fees it was around 1250USD.

As daddy mac says, we are screwed full stop. Not just cars. Regardless of how high our economy is right now, prices of objects never fall in NZ, we are heavily taxed on goods and services and then there is the straight up middle man cut which is a bit more than the tax itself.

The bearings havnt been noisy since I sprayed them with CRC. I found out the belt was changed 7000kkm ago, so thats good. I thought it looked brand new. I might just do both the top pulley bearings for the sake of it, cheap bearings, a bit of man time, job done.

Mate, your spark plugs are well past due at your mileage. We are told 60K miles here. That slight miss you are getting is more than likely due to this. Expensive, I know. You guys are getting shafted on parts prices, no doubt.
