Engine Serial Number

Recommended Posts

I've searched and not found info on this,

so if I've missed it, please direct me to the post or link.

Trying to find the Engine Serial Number, not the VIN,

on my 1998 Subaru Legacy GT

I found 2 codes near the starter motor.

One is the Transmission Serial number, a 10 digit number starting with letter T.

The other is a 6 digit numeric only number.

Is the 6 digit number the Engine Serial Number ?

Need this to order some head gaskets.

Ill post a pic, when I figure out how.

There are also two 6 digit numbers near the Air Filter Box,

near the engine block and transmission connection.

Both numbers are different.

What do these numbers mean ?

there is an id tag on the driver side strut tower under the hood. it will list the engine in your car.

I know what the engine in the car is, it's a 2.5 L.

I need the Engine Serial Number, because the gaskets are different based on serial number.

For the same model year, and same engine size, it seems there are different gaskets.

Here's an example, all of these are for the 2.5L H4:

Felpro Head Gasket Set

Part Number: 407-07022523

Notes: Engine Cylinder Head Gasket Set -- From Eng. Ser. No. 989331 To 993722

Felpro Head Gasket Set

Part Number: 407-07022522

Notes: Engine Cylinder Head Gasket Set -- From Eng. Ser. No. 993723 To 047282

Part Number: 407-07022522

Notes: Engine Cylinder Head Gasket Set -- To Eng. Ser. No. 989330;

ok, they are referring to the last 7? digits of your vin. that is the serial number for your car and the dealer can probably tell you what day it was made.

give them your vin, if that isn't enough for them go to a different dealer / supplier.

there are a lot of folks who would not recommend felpro gaskets. have you priced ''subaru'' gaskets online from a dealer. they about $75 for the pair, plus shipping.

You need @ 10 posts before you can add an attachment.

Yes, the serial # is the 6 digit number on the top of the block on the driver's side near the firewall.

Make sure the gaskets are of MLS style. OEM would be good.

and to the best of my knowledge, you can use the same head gasket for 96 - 99 ej25. so i don't really know what felpro is looking for.

link below to head gasket part number for subaru 98 GT ej25. i think the latest gast part number actually ends in ...11044AA610.

if you click on ''usage info'' you will see all the cars it was used in with the build dates.

These are Felpro MLS gaskets.

They are not the graphite ones, that degrade prematurely.

I think I figured out the part numbers for the Felpro MLS,

some of them are exactly the same.

This is the link I was looking at:

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1998/subaru/legacy/engine_mechanical/head_gasket.html

Thanks for the OEM part number.

I'd consider that too.

Also looking at the Six Star MLS and Cometic MLS gaskets.

The part numbers above are the partgeek.com numbers.

The Felpro part numbers are in the PDF file

From more research, the difference in the part numbers appears to be in the valve cover gaskets, in the head set.

For mine, I think it would be #HS26170PT1.

The Head gasket in the two headsets is the same.

Boy this is confusing for most people.

Engine Serial number is different from VIN serial number.

It appears that its the 6 digit number right under the starter motor,

on a 1998 Legacy GT.

Correction.

It appears that the Engine Serial number is under the Intake Manifold well hidden.

Here is a pic of the Transmission Serial number and the Engine Serial number.

The Engine serial number 205 931 is the lower one, at the bottom of the pic

The Transmission Serial number 524 391 is the upper number, at the top of the pic.
