Front Bumper Removal (2010+)

Recommended Posts

Just going into quick detail. I did not fully remove the bumper in this write-up but you get the point.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RAISE YOUR THE FRONT OF YOUR VEHICLE USING JACKSTANDS OR RAMPS.

REMOVE THESE 8 PUSH RETAINERS FROM THE TOP OF YOUR BUMPER/GRILLE.

UNDER THE CAR REMOVE THESE 4 PUSH RETAINERS

REPEAT ON THE OTHER SIDE...DON'T FORGET THE CENTER PUSH RETAINER.

IN THE TOP FRONT OF THE WHEEL WELLS YOU WILL REMOVE THESE PUSH RETAINERS.

THAT SHOULD BE A TOTAL OF 19 PUSH RETAINERS REMOVED.

TO REMOVE THE BUMPER GRAB THE CORNER EDGE OF THE FRONT BUMPER AND PULL AWAY AND TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THE BUMPER SHOULD POP OUT, ONCE YOU DO BOTH SIDES THE BUMPER WILL USUALLY FALL RIGHT OFF.

The trick isnt taking it off, the trick is getting it back on so everything lines up. Ive taken my bumper off about 5 times and the last time i didnt line everything up so i have a gap between the hood and the bumper, and also the sides of the bumper dont push in all the way...I was just too lazy to fix it, waiting for my new headlights to arrive so i can have a fresh start

...this is incredibly helpful, but I'd be lying if I said I still wasn't apprehensive about taking the front bumper off.

X's 2! I think I better put some cardboard on the ground to catch the bumper to avoid scratchtastrofe :spin:

I used a pair of sandals.

If you have fog lights, remember to disconnect them before letting the bumper drop to the ground. The fog light cables are short and I assume it would be better not to let the bumper dangle off them.

Thanks for the write up! Did it this morning.

I'm not sure that this make changing the low beam bulbs any easier, but I was changing low beam, high beam, and fog light bulbs all at the same time, so it was worth it I guess.

One thing to note, is to keep the top clips, the bottom clips, and the fender clips all separate from each other. The ones that go in the fenders are a different size from the bottom, etc.

I got about 22 push pins, not sure if you just lost some of them but I also had two right below the grill in the open area of the bumper. I will take some pictures today and post.

Also when purchasing new push pins, the ones that look the closest on that website are named "Subaru Front Bumper & Quarter Panel Push-Type Clips" anyone have any issues with those fitting?

I've removed my bumper dozens of times. There is only the 19 shown by JLGT (only 17 of them actually need to be removed). I'd be interested to see your extra 3. I have a feeling they are not necessary for removal.

Thanks very much for posting this tutorial along with the headlight removal procedure. It will make changing headlights much easier than reaching through the wheel well.

I've got 2, 2012 Outbacks and I suspect these instructions will work for me.

Has anyone tried replacing any of the fasterner clips?

I know someone posted these ones will work well for some of them:

Any thoughts on other sizes/styles we might need for the bumper, wheels fender liner etc?

Thanks

James

Has anyone ever tried just lifting the car up a few inches and then pulling the fender lining back to replace the headlight? It takes me less than 10 minutes including clean up, and with the wheel down you can pull the liner further back and get your hand in there almost straight in.

That's the way I did it.
