My Spec B JDM Headlight Retrofit

Streetlegal

Recommended Posts

Well I figured I would make a post on here then other people can possibly use it later. I'll update this as I go along.

I bought a set of JDM headlights from another member because I wanted to retrofit the car with better projectors.

I don't really have any pictures of them together that I can find so here goes with taking it all apart.

so much room for activities!

I'm really debating not cutting these up because they are a really good looking silver color but I'm not sure how I can make what I want fit without doing it. We'll see when I get there.

Cut the high beam reflector off so I can use the leveling mounts for a different projector

Going with Murano Bi-xenon projectors. Lens comparison

However, the Murano solenoid is ******* huge...Looking for a smaller solenoid to be able to use it.

First 3D printed mounting bracket.

Decided to do quads to I need a new mount. Just kinda dropped in the stock JDM one to see where it would sit.

Cardboard mock up FTW!

http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab114/gearhead_18/Mobile%20Uploads/received_10153290229270712_zpsc5rf5u4w.jpeg

That's where I'm at for now. Going to model up the new bracket at work tomorrow.

Side note, I have models made up with the mounting dimensions of the stock projector, TL projectors, and the Murano projectors and can make any combination of the two (or 3 I guess) into a bracket and print them if someone would need them.

I'm excited to see how these turn out. Still deciding on what I want to do for turn signals and whatnot. Not sure if I want to make a new housing over there. I do have a 3D printer so I've been considering it

Got some more work done yesterday. Finished trimming the bracket to make it flush and easier to mount to

http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab114/gearhead_18/Mobile%20Uploads/20150409_165905_zpsi4his7yx.jpghttp://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab114/gearhead_18/Mobile%20Uploads/20150409_165859_zps5jt8kfar.jpg

Printed off a new mounting bracket template to confirm everything and start figuring out how to mount the second projector.

http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab114/gearhead_18/Mobile%20Uploads/20150409_165648_zpsaybxhknm.jpg

Lots of drawing and measuring and trimming etc

http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab114/gearhead_18/Mobile%20Uploads/20150409_165655_zpsda8oatdm.jpg

Here's with the JDM shroud on. Main projector lines up perfect. Just need to figure out how and what I am going to squeeze into the other spot. Also trying to decide if I want to keep the projector shroud itself or trim out the round section and put on something different.

http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab114/gearhead_18/Mobile%20Uploads/20150409_165716_zps0qjf2kit.jpg

This is a quick mock-up with an old blazer projector that I had laying around. I don't think I am going to be able to fit the JDM projector in that spot without majorly trimming that shroud around the high beam area which I would really prefer not to do. Looks like I'm going to be looking for another set of smaller projectors...

Lastly still trying to decide what I want to do with the turn signal area. My design up and 3D print something custom to cover up over there.

Interested to see how this comes out. Might have to go for a Mini H1 for the high beam

Pretty sure that is what I am going to go with. Hoping I can modify a projector shroud to make them fit in there nicely. Might just make my own. I'll have to see.

Anything other than the Mini Gatling will require a lot of trimming, but will also look nicer.

I'm thinking about designing up and printing a custom shroud since the two projectors will be fixed together. I really don't want to cut up the oem shroud but it wont fit over the Muranos nicely.

That's part of why I'm going with modded RX330s for my lights. Muranos and RX350s require some extra finessing to work.

The Muranos have not been the issue actually. They fit quite well once you trim off the mounting arms. It does help that I can make a bracket quite easily though. Well thankfully these are a separate pair of lights so it doesn't matter how long I take

Do you have yours apart already?

Yeah I have an extra set too. I opened one for planning and testing, the other is closed for now

You planning on painting the inside of yours?

I'm on the fence about cutting these shrouds up since they are sort of rare apparently.

I'm going to see if I can find a pair of Mini D2S 2.0 projectors. The 3.0 are considerably bigger and wont fit from the dimensions I've found.

We might have some MD2S laying around the shop (I work for lightwerkz), and yeah I have the USDM 07 headlights and plan on painting them gloss black and leaving the shroud tip chrome. And the 3.0 is worlds better than 2.0. If you must have bixenon, consider RX350, maybe it will fit better, or hit up someone on hidplanet and have them convert maxima/RX330 non afs to bixenon with a custom shield. That would be the easiest option as the maxima projector is a bolt on replacement.

Actually the maxima is the same as the JDM hid projector so just have them converted.

I am putting the Murano Projectors in the factory low beam spot. If I want to keep the shroud then I can't use the JDM projector in the high beam location due to its size. I don't necesarily need bi-xenon but it seems like all the small ones that are about the size i need are bi-xenon or obnoxiously expensive for a small low beam. I looked at the mounting plate for the MD2S 3.0 and I do not think I have enough room to mount it on my bracket. I'll pull up my drawing and post it so you can see.

Found you some options http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/14/91e5de6bd4996de71773d8f0de9bec17.jpg left to right: Bosch E46 lowbeam, MD2S 2.0, two aftermarket clear lens lowbeam projectors.....all four accept D2S HID bulbs. If interested I can get output shots

Here is what I have for limitations in the high beam location

http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab114/gearhead_18/Mobile%20Uploads/Capture_zpswvbzlbpn.png

-The orange circles are the mounting holes for the MD2S 3.0

-Red centerline is the centerpoint of the high beam hole opening so the circle based on that can change size

-the outer limitations that I highlighted are as far over as I can go before I hit the plastic housing of the headlight on that plane

-the other holes toward the left of the drawing are the mounting points for the Murano projector.

I just don't have any other projectors to work with so I am limited to only the dimensions I can find. I might be able to mount the 3.0 if I can offset it forward enough. However, I'm not sure if the lens portion will even fit due to it being a 3" lens because you can see how close a blazer was to the shrouds already.

If you like I can get you some dimensions on those projectors tomorrow

That would be awesome. Would it maybe be possible for you to send me one of them so I can physically put it in the headlight? I can pay you ahead of time for it if you want as a down payment thingy while I have it. I would totally understand since I'm pretty much some random guy on the internet that only knows a few people on here so far.

Let me see what I can do for you and I'll shoot you a pm.

Looks good. Interested to see how this turns out. Was contemplating doing a quad setup when I redid my retrofit a few weeks ago but just didn't have the time to invest in it at the moment.

Well if you do I'll have the file for the bracket I use that I can send you or just get some more cut if you want.

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately the 08-09 headlights are a bit different inside:

On top of that, this is what I had to do to get FX-Rs to fit and be back far enough so they wouldn't hit the OEM shroud and still maintain OEM adjustability:

The top picture looks like the mount holes are the same for the oem projectors. What are the dimensions?

Between top 2 is 1.3"

Between bottom 2 is 1.575"

vertical distance is 3.9"

and your bracket looks very similar to mine actually

Sub'd for progress and ideas for mine.

RJ, any suggestions on custom shields for the Non-AFS RX330s? Have a set that I'm putting in some 06-07s and will also be painting them gloss black -- actually using Nightshades, so as to achieve the "black chrome" look.

You mean as far as custom curved shields? There's a how-to somewhere on hidplanet on making them, I'll see if I can find. They take a lot of time to do right, sometimes hours of tweaking to get the right output. I'm doing custom curved shields on AFS RX330s and it took a while to get the output right, but they're suuuuper wide and pretty bright....was definitely worth the work.

As far as painting shields, I would suggest high temperature paint as they will get hot (enough to burn you) due to the focused heat from the hid bulbs, especially at the center of the shield.
