2003 Legacy MT: Can you ID this rubber thing?

Recommended Posts

I love this forum. My first Subaru was a 1997 Legacy Brighton bought in 1999 and ran for 280,000 miles. I took that thing cross country 3 times. It would have ran longer had this forum been around back then.

I find many answers to many questions just by searching the internet. But I don't know what to do with this one. I found this rubber thing under my hood and I can't figure out where it belongs. Does anybody know? It's from a 2003 Legacy MT.

Much thanks. I went poking around and I found the clutch fork, sans boot. Of course, there was a leaf about to fall in the bell housing(?). I'm hoping that it isn't that big of a deal because there doesn't look like an easy way to get the boot on. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160605/bd247dedaf2a21a55021edb3561d964e.jpg I do live a mile down a dusty, dirt road though.

I literally had no idea where that thing could have lived.

that is really strange that it was off. it doesn't just do that, fall off, but at least you found it.

i found a screw from my throttle position sensor i dropped, and didn't see where it went, under my intake when i removed it. same with the other rubber cover on the engine side of the bell house. some how you just lose things and they get trapped places.

my car was a turd when i bought it and still is.

I just got the car and supposedly the clutch was changed a few months ago. The misplaced boot actually kinda corroborates that claim.

That thing was halfway off too! I haven't decided if this car is a turd yet. I already spent hours putting the pins back in the harness for the front o2 sensor but I did get the P0030 code to turn off. It needs new brakes for sure then I'll work on getting all the dents out.

So I put the boot back on. It was way easier than I thought it would be. I just removed one bolt for the slave cylinder and loosened the other one. It pivoted away and I was able to slide the boot on.

But while I was in there, I noticed that the components that I could see in the bell housing had a nice layer of dust on them. I recently watched a video of a guy changing his clutch and he was obsessed with how clean it should be (at least of oil).

So, should I try and clean that somehow or just leave it be?
