2007 NA 2.5 Legacy making noises - steering pump?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I'd replace the o-ring which may have shrunk due to age and colder weather, allowing air to get into the PS system, causing noise. You'll probably lose a little fluid when replacing the o-ring, so I'd have extra ps fluid (Subaru atf-hp) on hand.

Also not a bad idea to replace the ps fluid. You could use a turkey baster or something to suck the old fluid out of the reservoir, and pour new fluid in, but it's not too hard to do a more thorough flush. The total capacity of the ps system isn't much, service manual says .2qt for the oil tank, .7qt for the whole system.

This is what I did the first time around, when it was my first time ever replacing ps fluid.

I unbolt the reservoir, unhook the hose towards the back of the car, and put it into an empty cup/bottle whatever. I no longer use the camera since I know how quickly the fluid gets sucked in by the system, at that time I was worried and had no idea. The car will really suck down the fluid when the steering wheel is all the way locked to the right or left, I hear it's not good to hold the wheel that way for too long anyway.

Here's a picture of where the o-ring lives
