Yeah I think he wants to see pics of peoples backup camera mounting. I wouldn't mind either. I've already got the cable hooked up to my screen and run to the trunk but still haven't picked a camera yet.

 

It sucks that you can't go look at these in person anywhere to see actual sizes.

The car is so dirty, it would probably break my camera if I attempted a photo tomorrow . When I wash it this weekend I will get a pic or two for you guys.

Yes, what's around the plate (Escort ZR3 on the bottom, LPP on the top) are run through the external conduit. It's unlikely that I'll "clean that up" by tucking them under the trunk trim panel (as I've done with the LI units to the left and right), as the wiring is too thick, and I would not be able to effect good pass-through, without risking either the wiring, their strain-relief, or the trim panel's integrity, without some trimming.

 

The LI uses a flat CAT-5 cable, which really helped with the install:

The LI heads (highlighted in red in both pix) sit "flush" to the lip overhanging the rear plate. The LPP head (highlighted in yellow) protrudes out quite a bit - about a half-inch.

 

The LPP and ZR3 heads are certainly not there to look pretty.

been planning a backup cam for my CarPC but haven't thought of a good place to mount the cam.. unless it's on the license place holder .. which is... barf. lol

^ If the unit's small, above and right in the center, under the Subaru badge, would be my first choice.

 

There's a good amount of depth there (including strain relief), and if the wire's flat, you can easily run it through the trim panel, as I did with my LI heads.

 

And yes, I'm on this thread because I've been thinking about this project, myself. It would be nice to have a back-up cam, if solely to be sure that when I'm picking up the tot from preschool, that I don't back over anyone else.

As promised, here are a few pics of my cam. Hopefully they can give you guys some perspective on the size. The camera itself is a crime stopper, although I do not remember the specific model.

I have the same on my car - wired into the RCA jack in the nav display. I had the guys at Future Shop wire in a relay that fools the car into thinking the parking brake is up, when I put the car into reverse. This way, the backup camera comes on automatically.

The kenwood packaging calls it a "universal backup camera". Mine is integrated into the stock navigation screen.

 

The camera has a length of cable that plugs into a small video box as well as a typical yellow rca (composite) video out. The video box has power/ground/reverse signal coming out of that. I didn't use the reverse signal wire as it was redundant to the setup onto the stock nav.

 

I would imagine this camera can be used with almost any setup.

I'd be interested in seeing pics of the Nav screen showing a rearview pic....anyone?

My camera could be a stand alone unit. It basically has a video out and a 12v in. The video out is connected to the stock nav screen via the 4 pin molex connector, and the 12v is connected via a vampire clamp to my reverse lights.

 

I like the camera on rtb's ride. Its smaller, and looks to be a little bit adjustable. Mine most definitely is not adjustable. Alothough mine does have the added benefit of working with IR light...

That's the problem with my setup... I don't have a very good idea how far objects are away from the car. If I had to guess, I would say an bumper at the bottom of my screen would prob be 2 - 2.5 ft away. I have been planning to make some measurements and make a mark or two on the camera for a reference point, I just have not gotten around to it.

 

Right now its helpful just to ensure there is not a kid/dog/object in my reverse path. I still have to turn around to be sure I am not going to clock a car when parellel parking and such.

My intended use, too, is to just make sure that my toddler and her friends don't somehow end up behind the car, when I'm backing up.

 

I don't really intend to use it as a parking aid, I just want it to be able to see as close to the bumper as possible, since these guys fly so low to the ground.

Probably. I have the Kenwood mounted in the same place, and I've got it aimed low enough where I can see the rear bumper in the bottom of the picture. It provides a better perspecitve of how far things are away from the bumper.
