Morimoto XB LED Fog install from TheRetrofitSource

Recommended Posts

So we recently bought a 2010 Legacy fully loaded with everything except fog lights.

I wanted to rectify this but didn't want to spend the $300 the dealership wanted for the factory fog light kit. I came across the Morimoto XB LED Type S (there is a type S that fits the Subaru and others, and a Type T fits Toyota and the like.) I decided i'd rather have the higher light output than the factory fogs and tried to round up the OEM components individually as I did not need the factory light housings/bulbs.

I was told by a dealer that the mirror/fog light switch was ONLY available in the accessory kit, not on its own. I found this to be untrue when I found the parts elsewhere from a supplier in the U.S. (I was shipped the wrong factory blank switch initially but QuirkParts was very quick to rectify that and send me the proper switch at no charge. Excellent online pricing, best I found and great service btw.)

The install was super easy, I will provide a detailed parts list with links to the required parts and pricing below. The morimoto fogs come with mounting bolts to fit the factory nut insert clips (clips not included). This is a great way to install a brighter fog light kit on your fifth Gen without having to buy the factory kit. If you already have fogs on your car the Morimoto LED fogs are plug and play and a direct fit with OEM fitment and wiring connections.

The regular instructions supplied by Subaru at the following link work excellent: http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/72656/pdf/072656-072655-063750-H451SAJ000.pdf

http://www.quirkparts.com/oe-subaru/82501ag05b?search_str=82501AG05B

Total cost: $269.98 plus shipping.

Very few tools required, a 10mm socket to install the mounting bolt for the fog, a flat head screwdriver for removing the lower bumper shroud plugs, a smaller shorter flat head to release the mirror switch clips, a phillips for removing the one lower shroud plug and the dash trim at the mirror switch.

The connectors on the fogs are already pre-wired and crimped on the wires all you have to do is determine polarity and then insert them into the supplied connector that matches the factory version. Take your time with a screwdriver lining up the connector pins when trying to connect the two plugs.

Remove the two front plugs on the bottom of the bumper and the one phillips plastic plug facing the opposite direction inboard towards the engine. This gives enough space to get your hand behind the factory blank fog light opening covers, it doesn't take a ton of pressure to release the tabs and remove those black blanks. The rest of it is just following the instructions in the supplied PDF link at the top of this post.

The cut-off/output. I need to adjust the driver's side up a bit. I was playing with the adjusters and started lower on the driver's side to avoid glaring other drivers in the face.

Nice work!!! This is something I am looking forward to doing.

I'm happy with them, they're bright. The only limitation is how recessed the bezels are on the 5th Gen and how much of the lens the bezel covers. They would be far more effective mounted further forward with the lens fully exposed but i'm still not going to complain at all, they work great.

Hey testa....how would you compare those to the H11's you have in your stock fog housings?? Are the H11's appreciably better than the stock H16's and are the Morimotos appreciably better than the than your H11's?

Apologies for the thread jack. ;)

For those of you looking into ordering these, I highly recommend them along with the lamin-x yellow overlays. I initially ran these with the 4300k retroquick kit and the amount of white light output was so great that it was causing reflective road glare on my own windshield. The yellow nicely compliments the headlights without being overpowering. Just my $0.02.

Just now learning about this fog light option... Anyone know if they would work on 13-14 Legacies as well? The site says direct fitment for 10-12 Subaru Legacy but I am not sure if the fog lights changed between those years.

Yup....if they fit 2010 they fit all the way to 2014....not sure about 2015 6th Gen. I have switched the fogs from our 2012 to my 2013...same mounting.

Mine are on the way as well as the yellow laminx. Question though...does it come preinstalled from them or no? Thanks

No they are separate in the box. Very easy to install, the lamin-x was smaller in diameter than the fogs but if you center it when applying the shroud/bezel on the car covers the exposed portion.

Adam, Thanks for the post/ instruction.. this has been my first mod, did it yesterday.

I have been read posts about the HID retro quik mini H1... I know there are other theads. just wondering:

1. degree of difficulty.. similar to the fogs? although more time.

2. would 5000K match the fogs or 4300K' i did not want the yellow laminate.

again thanks for the write-up. can you believe 84K mile on my GT and no mods.. i know weak. but now i have dangerous confidence

The most difficult part of HID installation is usually finding a suitable mounting location for the ballasts. The rest is basic wiring. Instructions and threads should walk you through that.

The colour temp to match the LED fogs would be closer to 5000k from what I saw without the lamin-x, definitely white with no yellow. So 5k.

the retro quik is a complete retrofit which requires baking open the headlights and swapping out the entire projector...that is a lot more involved than a simple bulb swap to hids. the fog install is very easy in comparison

Very close to pulling the trigger on these. My only question is with the relay; it comes up as a horn relay. Is this just because they use the same relay? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Purchased! Cannot wait to get these in and try them out myself.
