Front Wheel Bearing -- DIY Walkthrough

Recommended Posts

Have you googled that question ? you may find the answer there.

Thanks for your wisdom max capacity.

Yeah, i went ahead and replaced the sensor. I found it interesting that the sensor was Bosch in a Duralast box.

Dash still lit up with following:

c0071, c0024, c0029 (The 29 came on after sensor swap, used to be c0047)

I guess i'll be taking it in to someone.

Sorry to hear about your speed sensor issue. Timken replacement should be fine.

Have you cleared the codes and driven your vehicle to see if the codes return?

So you replaced your wheel bearing with which brand? Duralast or Timken?

Running a timken bearing that had the magnet literature with it.

I've cleared the code via pulling the positive battery lead a few times and driven it 150 or so miles with no change.

I'm fortunate in that I have one of these Axle Seal Protectors. Subaru P/N is 28399SA010. They appear to be silicon (though I have seen a very thin plastic version) and are very similar to Colonel Red Racing's version. They work perfectly to get those splines and circlip through the seals without borking the sealing surface.

Need to bump this. Need to replace that DuraNOTlast bearing. Beginning to fail now after about 30K.

Each time I search for a Timken front bearing and look at the provided picture, I do not see any brand stamp on the bearing like 'NSK' or the like. Did Timken become el cheapo bearing now? Lots of complaints on Amazon as well..

Nice work! Appreciate the search you did. That's helpful.

The ntn hub is the best one you can get that is non oem (I think oem is skf). It's made by BCA which uses ntn bearings.

I did not know oem was skf. But yeah, I recall seeing NTN on several bearings on the car (e.g. timing components) and I trust these.

Update...

Changed the right front wheel bearing (Timken) with the NTN. Took me 30mn to remove it . So nice to work on a car when all of your bolts have anti seize on their threads.

Still took me another hour to finish the install though. Hey, it takes time to add anti seize back to all of your bolts you know; and also realize you installed the new bearing without the backing plate which set me back another 5-10 minutes.

Well, report is that the Duralast is actually still OK. No more noise at all as far as I can tell. I still purchased a second NTN just in case.
