mtngurl
Hello, I have a Subaru, Legacy 2005 2.5 sedan. Unfortunately I went in the ditch and crunched the front end pretty hard. Everything was shifted upwards, it looks mostly core support damage. the fan is hitting the serpentine belt, but other than that it looks like nothing is damaged under the hood. If anyone has some advice on replacing the radiator support I would greatly appreciate it. I am a newbie to working on cars, and I can use all the advice I can get! Shawn06SpecB
That thing is hit pretty hard. You have to take of the front fasica, grille, and lights. Remove the CRFM (condenser, radiator, fan module assembly) then maybe the core support to try to see how bad the frame is bent. I would recommend a pro to straighten the frame then source 2nd hand parts if you're on a budget.
boxkita
radiator support is tack welded in place. From lower damage, you might have bent the frame rails. You'll want to pull off the bumper skin and see what else is broken. did you drive it home? Pics with the hood open? mtngurl
I drove less than half a mile after the wreck. she's been sitting for a couple weeks getting rained on.. I can't afford to tow and get her looked at.
dgoodhue
In terms of repairing the damage, the car is totaled. I am mechanically inclined I wouldn't bother fixing it a 2005 2.5i Legacy with that damage. If the suspension isn't damaged or only has light damage, fix the suspension, bend the front end parts to make it drivable, so you can drive it while you save up money for a new car. You can sell the legacy as a parts car for cheap.
boxkita
"drove half mile then stopped"? Because noise, because something else? Get AAA membership and have it towed. If its not driveable and you're not mechanically inclined, this looks like a money pit of repair. Part it out and move on. Now I'm really curious how you ended up in the ditch hard enough to do that much damage. Initial D comes to mind :-) Build my car Boxkita Track days
boxkita
Pics of the underside might help with frame damage. Build my car Boxkita Track days
Infosecdad
Which state are you in? I have an SWP bumper that I could possibly send you for the cost of shipping if you go the route of trying to fix it. Really need pictures of the underside and with the bumper shell removed if possible to help determine the level of effort to fix and if it's worth it or not. mtngurl
So I tinkered a little, and realized that there is more actual body frame damage than I thought.. I had ordered new radiator, supports, and fans.. but I canceled the orders. I think I will try to bend that main frame somehow and jimmy rig it together.. she's already totaled years ago and has high miles.. :/ I just have no vehicle and really loved my car. pretty bummed I wrecked my Subie. I had my heart smashed and my car smashed days apart.. may have been driving reckless.. I hit the ditch less than half mile from my house, woke up the next day to a devastating surprise parked in my driveway.. my ex was a mechanic, I didn't know if he would help me or not.. I wasn't sure what I should do with her but she's getting kinda rusty, its been raining every day almost.. it's been almost a month.. I finally decided I needed to do something.. Any suggestions on parts to sell if all fails? oh and I am in South Dakota Edited August 20, 2019 by mtngurl
