COBB STS and poping out of gear issues

First off, we have the COBB Ver. 1 shifter.

Latelly our car has had a tendency to pop out of second gear. I checked the Internet and trimmed the interior rubber thing so that the shifter comes no where near it. I don't think that was the prolem though. The shifter still hits the plastic center console shifter surround piece when you are in second. We actually have to make sure that the shift boot is tucked all the way down into the hole so that the leather doesn't bunch up and further decrease the amount of room between the trim piece and the shifter.

You can see in the pictures below that the shifter is touching the plastic surround piece in second. Any insight or advice?

It was installed by PDX Tuning back in 2005.

It just started popping out.

About six month ago the bolt that holds the shift lever to the shift linkage came lose and the dealer retightened it. After that we noticed that the shift lever was aweful close to the center console shifter surround piece.

It is installed incorrectly.

Gee, I don't know. Either it was designed and engineered so that it hits the center console surround, it is broken or bent or it is not installed correctly. If I knew which one it was I would not be posting here.

It appears to be installed correctlly but I am not a ASE Mechanic and I don't have another LGT to compare it to.

Loosen up the bolt that the dealer tightened and see if you can adjust it so that it the shifter is centered. You do not want to dive around with it popping out of gear, that means that it is not fully engaged and that is not good for your transmission.

the bolt only has one hole to go through and fits snuggly. There is no room for adjustment. I can't find a picture of the shifter but it is similar in design to these ones by AVO and Kartboy.

Actually it is more like the AVO one because it looks like it has that bolt at the bottom also. What does that bolt at the bottom do?

You can change the height of the shifter with that bolt (or at least that what it appears to me).

Take a look at this...in the last picture is the COBB V1 STS...double check the orientation of yours??....

But the way the Cobb V1 STS is built, it almost looks like it can only go in one way...pivot point forward/stalk back. Dont know if there'd be enough room to have the stack forward/pivot point back??

hope this helps

That is not going to help me keep it from hitting though.
Right. But I believe it's an "angled" piece (or one where the hole is more so on one side of the shaft than the other), so if you flip the shifter 180*, you should be good.

Has it always been like this, or is this something that's just started happening recently?

The bolt holding the shifter to the shift linkage came loose about 6 months ago  and the dealer in Germany put it back together. I assumed they put it together correctly but you never know.

Hmm, that's odd. When the bolt came out, were you not able to change gears at all? I'd think you wouldn't be able to.

I'll bet it's mounted like this:

______O_____

When it should be mounted like this:

_______ ____

The bolt was still in the hole. It was just lose because the nut fell off. It caused the shift linkage to hit on the car and gears to grind when we shifted. It was scary. Initially I thought somehting had gone seriouslly wrong. :icon_frow

The offset round bolt hole it towards the front of the car.

Pretty sure that's your problem.

EDIT----hmmmmm, maybe it's not. Trying to think back to when I did my double adjustible install. I think the round bolt hole is on the front side of the shaft.

Flip it around. ;)

+1 also, was the shift knob twisted when you got it back? I noticed in the pix that MOMO was twisted to the right too much. They may have put it in wrong.

As I already mentioned our shifter is mechanically identical to this one. The visible part of this one is what is currentlly to the front on our car.

I honestly can't recall which side I had mine on. I would flip (rotate) it around 180* and see what that does. The good thing is that it's easy to do, and you don't need to remove it from the basket.

 It's sideways because I took it off to trim the interior rubber piece and didn't bother lining it up when I reassembled it..
