gregrock1989
05 OBXT 5MT. Had a engine rebuild done in December. Just started noticing this idle sound. Is that bottom or top end? Or something else? Thanks. https://youtu.be/cEmfUary-XY
Carmania24
Personally I can not tell if it is from top or bottom. I would take it back to the shop that did your rebuild (if you got it done through a shop ofcourse). If not take it to a mechanic you trust and have them diagnose. Hopefully nothing too serious. gregrock1989
Yeah im going back there on Wednesday, just wanted to get some opinions from here first. I should also add that this noise is intermittent, which is going to make diagnosing it so much more fun (not)
DaveWaters
Could be timing belt tensioner. If you remove the timing belt cover on the drivers side and run the engine you would see it bouncing on the belt.. there are you tube vids about this. apexi
It kind of sounds like the sound went away when you revved the engine. It's a shot in the dark, but I wonder if the timing belt tensioner is no good and rattling. Maybe see if the sound is coming from that area. The tensioner with the blue pulley can make a knocking sound as it bounces up and down
gregrock1989
Awesome, tensioner definitely seems plausible to me, that's good news I guess. I'll tell them to have a look there. Thanks guys.
JmP6889928
Almost sounds like an exhaust leak. Have you put your hands around all of the flanges to see if they might be leaking? Wet your hands and you can find it immediately if it is, in fact, an exhaust leak.
Gabo
I would follow JMP's advice before taking any timing covers off.
SesnaBlue
How’s the oil level? I would check exhaust leaks for sure. That timing belt tensioner needs to be bench bled before installing. Maybe they didn’t bleed it correctly?
gregrock1989
Idk about the exhaust leak, because it makes the sound intermittently.
bigfatdaddy
Could use a stethoscope to probe around the engine to see where the noise is loudest? Something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Mechanics-Stethoscope-Diagnostic-Automotive-Hearing/dp/B07HGB2V13/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_3?keywords=engine+stethoscope&qid=1552302270&s=industrial&sr=1-3-fkmrnull
gregrock1989
Oil level is fine. I check it every week and havent lost a drop since the rebuild
