the never ending vehicular adventures of derp

Recommended Posts

Well, this goes back 5 years, so I'll keep it brief.

I used to drive an Audi A4. Tuned, 3 ECU maps (89,91,100 octane), built suspension. Great car for a 20 year old hopped up on Iraq money.

Then one day, the bad weather came. There was a storm, and a flood, and an Audi in water up to the door handles. Insurance gave me 1,000 dollars for it. Thanks USAA!

After that, derp was very sad. He didn't have a fun car to drive around anymore. Derp bought a Nissan Maxima. It was a 2001 with a 5 speed manual. It was OK, but derp was bored and the Nissan ate starters like it needed them to survive.

One night at work, derp was looking on the internet on Autotrader. he found this:

Derp drove the 80 miles to go see it, and decided that it was good. So he traded the Nissan towards it and drove home in his new Legacy.

Derp then decided it was too quiet:

Then I drove it around a bunch.

There was a road trip for the honeymoon, it saw Mt. Rushmore, SLC, Sacramento, and San Fran where this happened:

Fucking gang fight while I was asleep in the hotel.

From there, it went to Carmel, LA, Solana Beach, Las Vegas, then home.

I raced it once:

Then I bought some whels.

This gave way to more race track stuff:

Which led me to realize that I needed more more. Yes, more of the more.

This led to more:

Things were great. I loved the car.

And then it all went to shit. I lost it coming out of a turn at over 100 MPH. I hit the tires against the wall doing around 80.

http://i.imgur.com/K6tibCC.jpg

She was dead. The driver's frame rail was kinked in at a really horrible angle, and the passenger side frame rail was pushed out approximately 4 inches. It was enough to buckle the passenger fender. The entire driver's side was smashed, the driver's window would no longer roll up. the core support was pushed in enough that the radiator hoses were now smashed against the pulleys. Upon being extricated, the tie rod was bent at nearly a 90 degree angle, leaving a pidgeon toed mess.

To be 100% honest, I was shattered. I'd driven the white wagon to the west coast twice, the east coast, the gulf of mexico, I took my honeymoon in it, I took my home from Kuwait road trip in it, I'd raced it. Nothing could replace it and the memories I built with this car.

So I bought this.

I decided it needed a two-tone interior, so I'm putting together the black interior from the white wagon with the beige one in this car to make it my own:

I also decided the the US brake lights suck, so it went from this:

The most recent update is that it tore an axle boot, had a cracked up-pipe, a dicked turbo inlet, and a bunch of other stuff. So, I went to work:

http://i.imgur.com/91s8vL1.jpg

Replaced a bunch of stuff, got it back together. It ticks under throttle when it's cold (or cold out) until it warms up, but it pulls OK so it's probably just tappy valves until it's warmer.

Ordered a set of the JDM engine covers, and got those as well as the Grimmspeed alternator shroud installed (far nicer than the subtle solutions one.

I need to figure out a time to get the car tuned, then I'll install the Grimmspeed intake, intercooler, Koyo radiator and Grimmspeed radiator shroud that I have waiting around.

Until then, here's the car as it sits today.

To be honest, I'm not as in love with the red one. It's got more rust underneath, and I haven't had the chance to build a bond with it. Basically it's not the white one, so it doesn't have a chance.

I'm currently talking with someone about making a deal work to get myself into another white 05 wagon, but we'll see if I can make that happen. If I can, I'll swap all my good stuff from this over to the white one, put the red one back together, then sell it.

The Supra is a 1987 Turbo. So far other than the coilovers and the driveshaft, it's received a Cometic metal head gasket, a full regasket top to bottom of the engine (fix the dreaded 7m head gasket asshattery), and general maintenance.

It needs a clutch (which I've got cash set aside for), weather seals for the targa top (which I have new in box), and it'll be ready to get miles put on it. I'm planning on having that up and running by end of April and driving it this summer. My goal is to hit Supras in Vegas in September.

right now I don't even drive the Supra, I need to have a guy become available to do the clutch and a few other things that I have neither the time nor the inclination to do.

In for the inevitable bought a white wagon in the future.

Guy goes to bar. Guy starts shit at bar with Mexican gangsters.

Mexican gangsters start shit back. Fight ensues. Dude leaves.

Dude gets in car, drives to hotel. Happens to be same hotel as I'm staying at.

Mexican gangsters follow. Fight continues. Rocks are thrown. Large ones. One hits car.

Cops come. Stuff happens. Car damaged.

The wheels were stolen out of my apartment garage by a drug addict. He waited a while then pawned them. They popped up on a facebook page and a friend of mine sent screenshots. Sent the wife to the pawnshop (I was at work) with the cops. Pawn shop cooperated, and said they'd give the wheels back.

I'd already claimed them on my renter's insurance, so I had a $3,500 payout on them. If I got them back it was lose the wheels or lose the money, so I asked the police if I could BUY them from the pawn shop, they said it was fine legally. One contingency for the payout was that I had to prove that I replaced them with 'a like item'. I'd think a brand new set of Enkeis with tires met that criteria.

Ended up making a deal with the pawn shop to pay them 100 dollars more for the wheels than they paid out - they didn't care, it got stolen goods out of their shop and they made a hundred bucks for their time.

Insurance tried to bullshit me (thanks again USAA) and tell me that I had to turn the wheels or the money over, but I then showed that I met their claim by providing the receipts for the Enkeis and stuff, and had them contact the detective for the case who informed them that USAA was now the victim of the case as I had been made whole.

I then sold the wheels and tires for like $1500 bucks since they were damaged during the theft. So I basically got free Enkeis and almost 3 grand out of 1 set of wheels and tires.
