Resonator debate

I pretty happy with the in car volume of the exhaust in the front two seats but my back seat passangers cringe at 2500 rpm. Was thinking about adding a small resonator. Has anyone dealt with the drone issues?

Helmholtz resonators like:

They can be tuned to kill drone at certain RPM and shouldn't affect anything else.

I've heard twin-loop mufflers or "j-turn" piping helps too.

I have a 2015 wrx mid pipe (modified slightly plus added resonator) and the dual tip mufflers. Looks pretty bad ass

Do you have any pics of this or links to a thread about doing it? I prefer the quiet tone of the stock exhaust for my daily, but I miss the quad tip I had on my 2012 wrx. I've been debating modifying a stock wrx/sti exhaust getting unloaded for cheap.

I'm out of work for another week because of surgery but when I'm back ill put it on the lift AMD show you the whole thing. I also made a custom mid pipe so I have a straight pipe from front cat to stock 2015 wrx mufflers with that resonator in the mid pipe I just cut a section out. The mufflers for me took some modification to the hangers. TheThe muffler bodies were same size so I just cut them off and re welded them on in my location. Rear bumper needed to be trimmed a hair on the inside tho and u don't even see it from out side car even at ground level. I post from my phone so I'll havto get pics and upload then on my laptop

Did the y-pipe work as it was?

When I put the resonator in I cut a section out a half inch shorter than resonator that way pipe became half inch longer. That got me away from the sway bar. I was about 1/8 inch before and it rattled bad. Also on the pass side muffler I welded the side mount on with the hook part a half inch closer to muffler body which pulled the whole rear exhaust assy over to the pass side a half inch which took care of the rattle I had on the driver side muffler heat shield.

Working in product development for an exhaust company, these threads are... interesting.

I've never really figured out how people define a resonator versus a muffler. Technically, they're all mufflers so... what makes one a resonator and another a muffler? ;)

Given the design of a Helmholtz and quarter wave (below), the "resonators" people typically put in the tunnel are just glass (or steel wool) packed mufflers just like the rear mufflers for most kits available for our cars, only packaged differently to fit.

Helmholtz resonators like:

Top one is a Helmholtz Resonator of questionable effectiveness (small chamber, short tube). The bottom one is just a quarter wave resonator as it doesn't have a chamber at the end.

Those were quick pictures I found on google; the one I was looking for was what I found a few years ago where the guy made them adjustable.

I guess this is more of a proper one:
