Voltage Erratic, Mechanics Stumped!

Recommended Posts

I have a 05 OBW LLBean with 52400 miles on it. My escort radar detector told me that the voltage was low and then bam, wouldnt start. I let it sit for an hour or so and then it started. However, from then on the voltage meter on the radar detector has been jumpin from 11V to 14V. Even when im driving around (either 10mph or 80mph...even 100mph:)) itll read that the voltage is 12V but then jump to 13V...14V...and stay they for awhile but then jump around. The dealership tested the battery and the alternator and saw that the battery failed. It was replaced with a brand new one ($100 after labor/parts). However, problem didnt stop, same thing. Then the alternator was replaced ($700). No good, problem still happening. The voltmeter that they used showed that my radar detector was only +/- 0.2V off. So its semi right. Anyone got any ideas? they want to keep it overnight next week to figure it out. They're all stumped. thanks

The car has been in Eastern PA its whole life. I knew you guys would figure this out! thanks. I'm going to go back to the dealership and ask them. You think they just installed that new battery and alternator for no reason?

I'm just guessing here so bare with me...:)

I think something is shorting out. Have you tried switching things off one by one to see if one of them causes the problem? Like for example start with every accessory on then switching them off one by one until the voltage goes steady.

Another guess is that the AWD system (the electronically-controlled hydraulic transfer clutch) is causing a feedback. So when you accelerate its transferring power to the rear and its doing this constantly so maybe that explains the spikes. Maybe a connector is loose?

Again just guessing :D
