xt2005bonbon
I've made the following mods to my shifter in the past year: -->kartboy short throw shifter -->kartboy shifter bushings like these ones below http://admotorsports.net/images/5spd%20combo.jpg after all that, shifter is still loose and sloppy. I took a look underneath and noticed that the shifter linkage is quite loose (see video below). I compared it to my 06, and the linkage is nice and stiff there. Looks like I may have to change that pin holding the shifter linkage or something. Anyone done this before? If yes, how do you change this pin? heiche
You might be best off replacing that entire u-joint assembly, it'll tighten things up substantially. The pin is probably fine, but the holes for it in the u-joint get elongated, and the u-joint assembly itself gets sloppy as well. If you remove it, it's actually a roll pin within another roll pin. Try to knock out the inner one first, then the outer one will come out easier. BtSsm - Android app/Bluetooth adapter. LV, logging, gauges and more. xt2005bonbon
always heiche to the rescue . How would you go about knocking out that inner pin? Kinda cramped there, plus I'd be afraid to hit the linkage while connected to the trans.
heiche
I had to rummage through my hope box (hope-you-find-it-box) to find some random part that fit. Have a close look at it and try different things to punch it out. Maybe a nail with the point cut off, for example. Then after the inner one is out, use a larger punch to get the outer rollpin out. Also, it does require some fairly strong hits to get it out, more than I thought. But it's fine after all that BtSsm - Android app/Bluetooth adapter. LV, logging, gauges and more. xt2005bonbon
So you went through this ordeal too? When you punched out these pins, weren't you afraid to damage the shifter rod that goes in the trans?
heiche
Yes I had the same issue, but my 5MT was on the workbench when I was replacing my noisy sloppy 5th gear. I saw how sloppy the u-joint was and replaced it, along with a new factory sts. I tapped out the pins with a hammer. BtSsm - Android app/Bluetooth adapter. LV, logging, gauges and more. legend2
Mine was exactly as your video shows. Some how the roll pin enlarged the hole around it causing the sloppyness. Install a new u joint for about 40-50$ and it feels great now Sent from my SM-S975L using Tapatalk

heiche
yup, 2 winters ago. replaced 5th gear, and while in there a few misc items. Aside from "normal" tools I had, I found it necessary to buy 3 more to remove/install bearings/gears/etc from the shafts, below. The press occasionally comes in handy for other projects too. I found that I had to go really slow, be extra methodical about everything, layout pieces as you take them apart so that you know without doubt how to put them back together later. It's like a giant heavy 3d puzzle. http://www.harborfreight.com/20-ton-...ess-32879.html http://www.harborfreight.com/bearing...set-93980.html http://www.harborfreight.com/large-b...ator-3979.html I would rate it harder than a valve job, since just getting the trans in/out of the car is already a beast of a job. Once it's on the bench, it's not too bad. Anyway, sorry for the tangent. Hopefully you won't need to be doing any of that for your shifter u-joint project BtSsm - Android app/Bluetooth adapter. xt2005bonbon
quick question... Why do we need to use these roll pins? I know there must be a reason, but can't we just replace these pins with a bolt and a nut, and make sure they are nice and tight? Wouldn't that work?
heiche
The shift rod is fairly small diameter, not sure how big of a bolt you can fit. Even if it's a hardened bolt, it will be subject to a lot of shear forces. Those little roll pins are tough. If you get it working though, it might be a great solution for this ongoing issue. FJuan
I've replaced mine with the Kartboy bushings, and it's a lot firmer when shifting. Yeah I saw the diameter is fairly small. I still may give it a go though. I've replaced mine with the Kartboy bushings, and it's a lot firmer when shifting. Have you tried switching back to the OEM bushings and see if there is any difference? Which bushings are you referring to? In any case, what I've installed did not improve anything. FWIW, my 06 has all stock bushings and shifting with this car is much more precise than this one. In any case, I strongly believe the issue is with that u-joint assembly. http://ccs.dogpile.com/ClickHandler.ashx?ld=20151019&app=1&c=info.dogpl&s=Dogpile&rc=info.dogpl&dc=&euip=66.234.199.109&pvaid=26e6f101849f4ae8883cf822324ae7f4&dt=Desktop&sid=1830193568.2882075271224.1445296222&vid=1830193568.2882075271224.1426791451.1407&fcoi=4&fcop=results-bottom&fct.uid=243283b6629b4828aad7994a67130d48&fpid=2&en=0WEFU%2FZhSoTF%2FFm%2BpLeuVl4UPZzISdzyg%2BaGYj7N8ISb7M1aTnzzgA%3D%3D&du=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.squarespace.com%2Fstatic%2F523881a4e4b0407d056aba16%2Ft%2F53153570e4b0ecef443ce491%2F1393898936258%2Fok-then.gif&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.squarespace.com%2Fstatic%2F523881a4e4b0407d056aba16%2Ft%2F53153570e4b0ecef443ce491%2F1393898936258%2Fok-then.gif&ap=11&coi=772&cop=main-title&npp=11&p=0&pp=0&ep=11&mid=9&hash=D38D8F58F6B9B247FF62E15A54027AA6

Referring to the shifter leak bushing as the OP stated. I did notice a more precise shifting difference when I installed the Poly bushings, and I do agree with you, that the u-joint is a piece of junk. Next time I pull the trans off I'll like to see if there is any improvements can be done with that u-joint. My wife's balls are delicious.
xt2005bonbon
I never updated this thread. But earlier this year, I did change the u-joint assembly. The shifting feel is better, still not perfect, but definitely better.
xt2005bonbon
let me update this thread again After the change I made last year, I still was not satisfied with how loose it felt. So I went ahead and changed the roll pins 2 weeks ago. Now, it feels pretty tight. So lesson here: if you plan to change that u-joint, spend the extra 5 bucks to get that roll pin as well. scoobydrvr
I've got a similar story with my car. Replaced all the bushings and linkages with kartboy and Turn In where available. Replacing the U join\t helped a lot but I still have slop. Finally got under the car and had someone move the shifter around in the dead zone and found the slop is inside the transmission. I'm assuming this is what heiche is talking about when he said he replaced some things in his box? Curious to know more about that job...
xt2005bonbon
Yeah there's that too I think. Since I changed the pin, I can see that the u-joint is really tight now. However, I do see some slight play in that rod that goes into the trans. Probably same problem as you.
