EnduringGuerila's '05 OBXT Build

Recommended Posts

Purchased my 2005 Outback XT (5MT) for $1600 on Aug 19th, 2019.

The car is all stock with 193,978 on the odo and a bad turbo. The body and interior are in pretty great shape, though I do hate the two tone grey/silver paint. (maybe one day that'll be changed)

The seller claimed the turbo was seized but it had other issues...

I haven't finished the build yet but,

here is the parts list: (total $4,788.03)

Misc:

Plans:

  • Clutch Masters FX350
  • flywheel (haven't decided what yet)
  • fuel pump
  • fuel injectors
  • TGA Performance Tune $550
  • Full stereo upgrade (similar to but better than what I did on my 4runner here [poorly documented])
  • suspension
  • lighter weight / more attractive wheels
  • de-badge (remove all logos, words etc from car)
  • paint car
  • replace front grill, something like this? remove logo and hate the 'chrome'

I need to do a compression test on each cylinder before getting it tuned, will post those here.

HP numbers for later reference/context:

  • 250hp 2005 OBXT stock
  • 200hp 2015 WRX stock (~230hp with just a tune)
  • 300hp 2004 STI stock
  • 310hp 2020 STI stock

Shortcuts:

More to come!

I also was never a fan of the two tone body, but then I saw Cruisemobile's setup and it changed my mind immediately [emoji106]

THIS guy?

All the pic links died! His build thread has been dead for over a year so I guess all his pics were purged by Tinypic.

Nah they were hosted elsewhere. All the image hosting sites have gotten wonky. Either he deleted the pics because he's not active anymore and couldn't remember why they were there or tinypic changed their hosting and broke the links.

For any diys or major things, you should try to upload your pics as attachments directly to the thread. Legacy gt hosts their own image server.

Yes, Cruisemobile has a good-lookin' wagon. Hard to find a pic of it today though.

This image uploading information is great advice. Take it. It's a struggle going through some of the older threads for reference photos and coming short bc of some third party issue. Frustrating, rather.

The other frustration is old info about parts. Like rallitek doesn't make sway bars anymore and grimmspeed no longer ports and polishes headers. And probably an infinite other number of things.

Not to derail your build thread too much here.

Lol, no worries. At least for the h̶e̶a̶d̶e̶r̶s̶ heads, if I do rebuild I plan on looking into the 2008+ STI h̶e̶a̶d̶e̶r̶s̶ heads. I want to know how much of a benefit they might be and how difficult the setup would be to use them. Edited by EnduringGuerila

Sorry, I meant to say the STI heads (engine), not headers (exhaust).

Post 3 - All EJ255 Engines are NOT created Equal

I read about the unequal headers and how that's what gives the boxer engine the signature sound and reduces turbo lag.

I don't know if/when I'll buy an exhaust header but I'd stick with unequal for sure.

Yep that's him! Tinypic is being rude about it, but it seems they can't prevent previously hosted images from showing up in a google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=Cruisemobile2&safe=off&rlz=1C1GCEB_enUS871US871&tbm=isch&sxsrf=ACYBGNRz8nSfs6kSM_hd8KFr8gTe6LGHQg:1579812277456&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjTye-sy5rnAhWUsp4KHUtIAucQ_AUIDCgD&biw=1536&bih=722&dpr=1.25#imgrc=_

Hopefully that link works for you, it should show his wagon in various states of modification throughout the years

Oh man thank you for that. That looks really good. Apparently a Mach v spoiler. I wonder how that looks compared to Madrigs.

That might be the first two tone car I thought really looked good. I think it was the wheels and tire lettering that did it.

I think Madrig said his was shorter than the Mach V wing. Or maybe he said it didn't flare up like his. I know it doesn't flare up as much, if any, as the Mach V wing. Just look at Kalien32's beautiful, blue carbon fiber wing Madrig made.

The Mach V looks more like the Liberal Style spoiler:

I want one bad.

  • 4 weeks later...

I finally got started on the build and here is a quick update.

(I'll also be updating the original posts)

Here is the mess of a garage I've been working in, had to take some bikes out to make room...

The new pipes!

The new turbo makes contact with the GrimmSpeed downpipe

The section circled in red makes contact with the waste gate hinge since the waste gate is slightly larger than stock.

I got the old exhaust and up-pipe off

The old exhaust was broken in two places from the previous owner bottoming out!

Next to my hand to compare size (insert dick joke here)

The up-pipe was actually in good condition, it just has that shitty cat and is a smaller diameter than the new catless up-pipe.

Got the old air intake out! The air box has a large "junk" blob on the bottom that seems to just collect debris

(don't tell anyone but I accidentally ordered the Cobb WRX/STI intake instead of the OBXT intake so I have to wait for that to arrive...)

Looks like you're making progress! I think the normal Vf-40/46 needs some adjusting with that tab on the grimmspeed dp.

The junk blob is commonly referred to as the milk jug and commonly removed. It's a resonator to help cut down on turbo noise. It's quite a bit louder without it.

What exhaust did you go with? Is that the avo with the down turned tips? Jk I scrolled up. I'm interested to hear what you think. I've been looking at that and the nameless recently.

As much as I don't want the car to be super loud... I think I do want all the turbo noise!

I love it. Forever now I feel the need for a different exhaust after the quotes from friends of "it sounds like a spaceship" and "I like that it's screaming"

I think the turbo whoosh with the exhaust would be great. It's the sound of powahhhh

Intake install

The hood prop bracket is too low and keeps the Cobb cover from fitting properly.

So I took a Dremel to it, cut off a bunch of the bottom and it didn't seem to compromise the strength.

I cleaned this up some more right after taking the pic.

Now that the Cobb cover fits under the hood prop, the stock air duct is in the way.

I started off using the Dremel but it was difficult to get clean cuts.

bd0505816eaee93642d85bd840751452.jpg

Switched to using a razor blade. Took a lot more effort than the Dremel but much cleaner cut. The plastic is actually surprisingly difficult to cut with a razor.

Cover finally fits:

Luckily the chunk i had to cut off didn't cut into the duct itself

I had to cut slightly crooked to avoid cutting this plastic 'rivet'

Finished?

I cleaned it with WD-40 lol

Brakes install

The hub was quite dirty. Removing the wheels and old rotors was quite difficult.

I cleaned up the hub with a wire brush on my drill

ccf5d472d4b553e3b8ca3e4f46a55a74.jpg

Slathered the center of the hub with anti-seize and mounted the rotor.

Put brake grease on the brake pad tabs
