The Gen 4 Subaruoutback.org forum is running slow these days (ie, not many post). So I'm posting this here. Legacy guys mod their cars much more anyway.

I'm on the verge of replacing the grill on my Outback. The only problem is that I'm torn between a custom mesh and a modified Legacy grill.

I have already made the pattern for the mesh grill, but I like the look of the Legacy grill as well. I do know the Legacy grill is not a perfect match and plan on a filler panel on the bottom and partially up the sides. With the car being dark grey, the filler panel will not be as noticeable as a lighter color would be.

I've made a poll to see what everyone thinks, as I'm open to being swayed one way or another. :smile2:.

Good choice on the mesh supplier - some of us on here are using their stuff with good success.

Best approach would be to buy a second stock 2010-12 USDM Outback grill (especially if it is a bit different in terms of dimensions from the 2010-12 USDM Legacy grill), use a dremel and some other tools to trim out the center section. And install the mesh of choice where you want it (outside/front of the frame, mid-way in the frame, inside/back of the frame). The third location gives you the most mounting flexibility but its a particular look you might not like... then experiment with the stock or the Legacy trunk emblem or any other emblems to perhaps match the JDM/ADM mesh grill look. Vinyl wrap, color code paint or plastidip the chrome if you prefer.

This solution will offer you the best fit and overall finish. Plus make it easy to swap the grills with stock if you choose in the future.

Another option is to go with the CMod Legacy grill as base and still use the mesh you chose (the original mesh on it is terrible quality). It might neede the filler panel even more than the OEM 2010-12 Legacy grill though.

I was throwing around the idea of a trimmed up Outback grill. The only issue was it would double the cost of the grill. Still might be the best choice though.

Pick one up on eBay, doesn't really matter if it has finish, chrome damage or damage to any of the grill surface, emblem, etc. since you'll be trimming all that away.

If you're lucky, you can find one for <$100... provided they're posted up. Junkyards (including those with online warehouse DBs) are also an option. I bet they could source one easily.

it takes a lot of time to get the curves right around the bottom. Thankfully we have a belt sander just inside the shop. So I test fit, mark it with a sharpie, sand a little off, test fit.......

There is no outer trim like the Legacys, and the trim I'm using doesn't leave room for error. I was looking for another trim but haven't found one I like yet.

Needs a badge or something imo

Planning on adding a badge to it. Painting it black as well. Just not sure if I should go with Plasti Dip, flat black, or semi gloss black.

The grill is all trimmed to shape (still needs painted), but I have ran into an issue with mounting. I have not come up with a good solution to attach it to the car. I have tried zip-ties, #10 screws from the front, ect. But they don't hold the grill right or look bad from the front. Any suggestions?

Can you cut out pieces from the original one, around the area where it mounts to the factory points. The key I think IMHO would be to leave enough material on the cut outs to kind of brace the mesh and apply pressure from the back part of the grill to hold it in place and maybe superglue or mount the mesh to the plastic "braces" somehow... Just my 2. Best of luck.

I took some pictures of the mounting areas. I think I'm going to have to epoxy a stud or nut to the backside. The little clips I found are not going to work. They sit too close to the holes to get anything hooked around them.

I tried some small eye bolts, but they were still too big (eye was too big). I want to have the grill fairly easy to remove, so no wire or zip-ties.

what's easier to remove than a ziptie?

Aparently nothing. Nothing else I have tried has worked, so I'm going to go with zipties. I tried a different mounting location and it seems to work well. Going to paint and install the grill this weekend.
