kaareand
So I'm in the middle of the 5EAT to 6MT swap. Some background first, transmission blew on April 11th, bought 04 6 speed later in the month, took it into the shop on July 8th, and its still there. They've run into countless issues, some that we've been able to get around/fix, but there are a few roadblocks. First and foremost is the crossmember for the transmission. My car (2005 Legacy GT Wagon auto) has a different floor pan than the manual transmissions, making the crossmember of the 6MT not line up. I'm pretty sure the 5EAT crossmember doesn't line up with the 6MT transmission either, but if it did I'm not even sure I would want to use it on it. Has anyone dealt with it, or just any feedback would help. I've heard of people taking the front (transmission side) of the 6MT Crossmember and welding it to the back (floor pan side) of the 5EAT Crossmember, with a 3.5" extension in the middle. Any input would helpThe 2004 Driveshaft is too short for the chassis of the legacy wagon. I'm not sure if the length between trans and the rear diff is different than the sedan legacy, but I've heard of people using a 4EAT driveshaft, which would be easier on the pockets than a custom driveshaft or an 08+ driveshaft. Again, any input would be awesome.Next is the shifter mounting bracket, basically what allows the shifter mount to attach to the body of the car. Not sure what to use, or even what to look for to get. ABS Sensors for the Brembo's, would obviously be for the 04 STI, but I'm unsure if the speed sensor has to be STI or Legacy. I'm assuming that because its on the actual transmission unit, it'll be STI. After I get whatever parts are needed here, the rest should be 1-2-3. Needless to say, I'm ready after nearly 6 months to drive my car again. Thanks for your help!
dr20t
Modify the 6 speed crossmember to suit. Link here to pics: http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=15523&start=1035 You should be using the r180 diff, tailshaft and axles from a spec b and it will all bolt up
starionesir
How have you been able to get around the can bus codes and the issues with the cruise control? Have you figured out how you are going to use the active diff or gonna leave it as is?
Max Capacity
Being where your from, you should talk with Mike or Rey at www.AZPinstalls.com in NJ they may be able to help you. BTW, no one has gotten cruise control to work going 5eat to 5 or 6mt. I don't believe the floor pan is different in the 4th Gen just the mounting brackets. The shop Foreman Dave Brady at ESP in Sterling Ma is one of the first to do a 5eat to 5mt swap years ago. Canbus errors easy to overcome by firstly ensuring correct sensors / pins are utilized from the 6mt and associated hardware (neutral safety switch and reverse light switch etc). Secondly you will need to flash the manual ecu rom from the same year model vehicle as your chassis number. Test write first to ensure compatability so it doesn't brick it. Max Capacity
http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/transmission-gear-ratios-and-final-drives-229267.html OP, that may help too. dr20t, thanks for the education. I'm not really up on 5eat's in these cars. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. m sprank
Personally, I would sell the 5EAT and buy a 5MT/6MT LGT. I own the shop and the time, effort, expense is not worth it. Not at the current value of the cars.
kaareand
Update: I talked with a friend who has another friend who used did the same thing to his auto legacy GT. He used the 5MT crossmember from the same year legacy gt, and essentially punched out the holes that came covered from the factory and it bolted right up. I ended up ordering an 08+ 1 piece aluminium driveshaft from the DSS. The price of that new was only slightly more than an OEM one from Subaru, and I'm not too keen on searching around for a probably high mileage used driveshaft. Still don't know about the "shifter mounting bracket". Couldn't find anything about it on Subaru's website, and even when I called my local dealership, they couldn't help me. So any input on what this is, where I can get one, and what model to use it from would be great. My last concern is the wiring. I've heard that I may need to use the dash harness from the 5MT Legacy GT of my year. Since the transmission is still hanging from the car with no driveshaft, I'm not quite at this step yet, but I'd like to be prepared so I'm not spending days aimlessly searching the internet for answers. Again, any input would be super helpful and thanks for the help.
whitetiger
all this talk of canbus when the 05-06 LGTs we k-line, not canbus. 07+ is canbus.
utc_pyro
all this talk of canbus when the 05-06 LGTs we k-line, not canbus. 07+ is canbus. They ALL use canbus internally. They only exposed it the ODB-II port on the later cars. OP: You can flash a MT rom on your ECU and it'll be happy. Not sure if the guage cluster will be though. If it runs and drives, but it has an auto cluster, I'd be happy. May keep the auto dash as a relic of how the car used to be.
