WESTcoast
I have a 99 lgt with now what I found out a forester 4eat in it. I was told when I first bought the car that the tranny was rebuilt(so that lie is now out in the open). I have a 4eat with matching diff out of a 98 rs, the guy who is doing the swap for me said the transmissions are physically different. It will still bolt up but wiring wise might and might not work with the tcu I know there is a thing with the phase 1 and phase 2 transmissions. My question is whats the difference between them? Is it wiring, other than different 4eats having different ratio's what would make it physically different?
Jab83
its not... its the same. your ecu will work with it just fine... Any trans from any EJ engine. Are all the same all hook up. SO you'll be good. He's jsut trying to get more money by saying its hard
johnegg
not quite. the 99 outback has a phase 2 trans and they are not compatible with the phase 1 trans. i'm pretty sure the 99 legacy GT has a phase 1 trans. it all depends on the replacement trans, model and year. every ej trans has a id code number on the bell housing at the starter. compare the new trans number to the old trans number. if they both start with TZ102Z2...... the they are the same. if the new trans number starts with something different like TZ1A4Z..... then it will not work. or to keep it simple, if the new trans has an external spin on filter like an engine oil filter, it will not work. the 99 GT should match the trans from any 2.5L outback, LSi, GT or forester 96 - 98. and some 99 cars like the GT, maybe? the forester?. they all have the same final drive ratio .(even though they do not all have the same trans code numbers they all start with TZ102Z2.....) what are the trans code numbers on your old and new trans????? edit: if the wire connectors are the same the trans should work. when they went to phase 2 they changed the wiring connector and added several more sensors to the trans. WESTcoast
haha thanks guys, I will get back to you about the tranny codes. The tranny i picked up to throw in is one out of an 98 2.5rs. Bleh I hope it works so I dont have to do more scrounging for another compatible tranny. If I had time and more money I would be on the search for a 5spd and all the necessary parts but right now im just trying to keep it simple stupid. The Mechanic who I'm taking it to is a well respected subaru shop in the bay area, the guy is up front about everything and if he stumbles onto something that not right he will contact me (like he did today about the tranny) Once the car is out the shop I have a hell of a parts list to update lol

Stasis
Yeah I must admit they're a fun drive and felt quite similar to the wrx sti I borrowed while my lgt was stuck in an earthquake zone lol. I'm just not a fan of the aesthetics, they feel like too much of a toy for me. I can see why other people would like them though.
