It doesn't affect emissions, the extra heating is purely an 'in case you move to Siberia" thing

No gains really, I prefer to think of it as "cutting losses". You make your best power in perfect conditions, the extra heating makes for worse conditions so doing away with it puts you a little closer to ideal.
