got it back together last night and drove it to work today. no rattles. you are the man witht his thread.
for the instrument cluster, once you remove the pieces under the steering column and the metal plate behind that, you can look up at the bottom of the instrument cluster and there are two small screws up there that go into the bottom of the cluster. after all three screws were out, I put a towel on the top of the column and pulled the cluster forward and disconnected the two wire harnesses on the back. this gave me enough room to move the cluster side to side to get the two screws out behind the cluster. I left the cluster sit there wrapped in an old t shirt until the dash was completely loose then lifted up on the dash to get the cluster out. make sure to protect the face while it is waiting for removal. i already had the vents and radio out before the cluster, so i had good access for moving it around. during installation, i set the dash in place then raised it up enough to get the cluster back in.
