An Illustrated Guide to Getting Rid of that Feet Smell
1 Attachment(s)
When I got my car a few thousand miles ago I noticed a distinct smell of socks whenever I turned the AC on. It would only linger for a few minutes but it still bothered me.

A quick search and I found this thread with a suggestion to spritz a water + bleach solution to kill mold that may cause the odor. I gave it a shot and it worked like a charm. Of course if after this you still experience a strange odor you should consider replacing your cabin air filter (that's a whole 'nother guide).

Anyway, I decided to make a quick, Illustrated guide of the whole process. I hope someone finds it useful.

Wow - very professional, Riot!

I nominate you to be the official "how to" guide writer for the forum!! :)

I can't really take credit for the solution, I just thought it deserved its own thread. The idea comes from crossle32.

I'm working on another how to, the quintessential guide to doing an oil change.

havent noticed a smell myself yet but.... would a product such as febreeze or something work as well? in place of bleach?

Beanboy 06-24-2007 06:13 PM

Febreeze would mask it more than killing the source. If you want something that smells purty, grab a can of Lysol.

vkchu 06-27-2007 01:14 PM

as mentioned above, lysol works too, but bleach is def gonna make the funk go away.

Riot 06-27-2007 02:39 PM

^ I don't really feel too comfortable breathing in any Lysol but I'm sure its very effective. After the bleach treatment the smell was very crisp and clean, I felt like I was in a hospital :p

After the 2 week, 5k-mile+ cross-country road trip I just returned from, I SERIOUSLY need this.

It smells like there's a dead animal in my air-con.

thanks mate.

Riot 07-06-2007 07:24 PM

Thanks everyone, all this feedback might just give me the motivation to finish the oil change guide :p
