Engine won't crank, dash has "Er HC" on odometer
Hi all.

After pulling then engine and replacing a valve on my 2005 Outback XT, the engine is finally back in and ready to start. The problem? It won't.

I'll elaborate, when I turn on ("On" key position) the dash does its thing, and then the engine temp gauge pegs at "HOT" and my fuel gauge goes to full or empty. An error code Er HC is on my odometer.

I do have an acessport, but I HAVE NOT used it on my car, AT ALL.

I've tried disconnecting the battery, wiggling and reconnecting the wire plug near the turbo and nothing has helped.

Any ideas?

Ate the test mode connectors connected?

Are the test plugs(green ones usually under carpet) under your glove box connected? If so disconnect those suckers.

I never touched any green plugs in the car, so they aren't connected.

Hmm. Never seen that code pop otherwise. Not saying you are wrong, but I would look just to eliminate them. GL

I checked and they aren't hooked up. To be honest I don't even know where the green connector hooks into.

Well. At least they are eliminated from the troubleshooting. BTW There are 2 of them under there. They connect together to enter "test" mode.

I might add that the check engine light is NOT turning on either. Hopefully that helps. I tried to pull the codes with my code reader and it couldn't pick up my ecm? Does this mean my ecm fried for no reason?

laz 07-28-2013 04:27 PM

That code usually means it can't read the computer. You may have a bricked ecu.

ScoobyDoo94 07-28-2013 04:29 PM

How could the ecm get bricked? There's no way that it could've been fried.

dudeondacouch 07-28-2013 04:30 PM

There's always a way...

laz 07-28-2013 04:30 PM

Or maybe a harness got cut? Something is not either plugged in all the way or something broke.

ScoobyDoo94 07-28-2013 04:32 PM

Everything is plugged in and nothing got cut. I'm going to take off the intercooler and check all the connections.

laz 07-28-2013 04:40 PM

By any chance did you jump the car with booster cables? Any other electrical spike when you plugged in the battery?

ScoobyDoo94 07-28-2013 04:43 PM

No, but right now my dad insisted on charging up the battery for whatever reason. But the Er HC code came up before he decided that charging it was a good idea.
